Believe it or not, wedding season is right around the corner. And with the average bride planning at least six months to a year or more in advance, 2011 wedding trends have been the talk of the town. We have researched the latest and greatest fashion and décor trends and have compiled them into an easy-to-navigate format for brides and grooms. That being said, let's begin.

Wedding Attire 2011

Good news ladies, the latest trends in wedding dresses are not only wearable—they are comfortable without lacking intricate details and show-stopping appeal. Designers are beginning to move away from ruffles and have instead added beautiful crystal embellishments to add visual interest and tulle overlays to maximize volume. Many designers are even incorporating subtle pockets into the folds of the dress to make room for that compact mirror or lip balm. But don't assume that pockets suggest a casual appearance. Rather, the pockets add vintage sophistication—a big trend on the runways. Designers are showcasing streamlined, red-carpet style by incorporating beautiful textures and materials. Two piece dresses are also coming to the forefront to give brides a better fit and more options to individualize their look.

Trend leaders Vera Wang and Reem Acra will continue to capture the princess within every woman's heart with their romantic gowns. Lace remains on the scene as well as the vintage trend we saw emerge in 2010. On runways throughout the United States, designers are featuring trumpet-style dresses that accentuate the right curves and kicks out at the bottom for a touch of pizzazz.

And brides can forget the cathedral veil this season. Instead, brides will be favoring family heirlooms, bird cage veils, or flower arrangements in lieu of elaborate head pieces.

Bridesmaids will follow suit. Tea-length styles and light and billowy dresses will be all the rage this spring.

For the men, 2011 trends suggest that grooms will be steering away from tuxedos and opting for a more casual suit alternative. Michael Andrews, CEO of Michael Andrew Bespoke in New York, says that there is a strong trend towards less formal weddings. Cotton and linen suits are a modern option for daytime and destination weddings. Andrews also said that there has been a high demand for the bow tie. For years, long black ties had eclipsed the traditional bow tie in popularity, but it's back for 2011 and making a statement.

After years of different careers, Tracy Caruso, of Manchester, NH, is happy to once again be at WZID.

Talking about her decision to go into radio, Tracy shares, “I decided that I wanted to work in radio when I was in high school. I had one teacher, Mr.. Hughard, who taught a speech class that I took in my junior and senior years. This really made me realize that I wanted to do something with speaking, although not necessarily in front of a crowd of people. People are shocked to hear that I’m actually nervous to speak in front of people, but it’s different to be in a little room with a microphone in front of you. There aren’t millions of eyes staring at you!”

Tracy first became involved in radio when she was still at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting through their placement program. “I got really lucky and got my first job at a morning show for a tiny AM station in Fitchburg, and when I say tiny, I mean it – it was in a house. We had a fireplace in the studio and everything, it was really cozy.” Since her debut at this station, Tracy has worked for many others, including WORC AM in Worcester, WMBU in Nashua, WKNE in Keene, which was her first FM station, and she has worked twice at WZID.

When most women approach menopause, they tend to focus their attention on three symptoms: hot-flashes, mood swings and weight gain. These symptoms can be problematic and certainly may affect quality of life but there is something else to consider that may not cause any symptoms at all and that is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by weak and brittle bones that are more likely to fracture, it is often called a silent disease affecting men and women of any age, but most commonly affects post-menopausal women. Often, there are often no symptoms until a bone breaks.

Besides being a post-menopausal female, there are other risk factors for developing osteoporosis, or osteopenia, which occurs when bones are weaker than normal, but not to the point of osteoporosis. These risk factors include increased age, ethnicity (Caucasian, Asian), low weight, previous fracture(s) before the age of 45, current cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use and rheumatoid arthritis. Inactivity, low calcium and vitamin D intake, previous cigarette smoking, recurrent falls and certain medications (heparin, corticosteroids like prednisone, certain seizure medications and excessive thyroid supplementation) can also lead to osteoporosis. As people move into their 50s and 60s, priorities change. The hours spent on yard work and house work is less appealing and as kids move on there’s all that unneeded space.

Downsizing can offer many financial benefits including saving potentially tens of thousands of dollars with a lower (or no mortgage), and lower taxes, insurance and utilities. There are emotional benefits too, as studies show that you can improve your quality of life by freeing up time to do the things you want to do!

Start by developing a financial plan that outlines what is important to you. What type of lifestyle do you want to live today and what kind of home could you see yourself living comfortably in at age 70 or 80? You don’t have to move to predictable retirement destinations. Telecommuting allows many people to continue their working lives and education from anywhere. The magic combination might involve cheaper real estate, desired weather and activities, travel options, and access to good doctors and quality health care facilities. Setting personal boundaries is important in relationships. It allows you to be centered, indicates to others how to treat you, and helps you find the right person.

If we do not set personal boundaries, we can become resentful, stressed, and quickly disappointed in attempts at dating. We jeopardize our chances at forming new, healthy relationships.

To set personal boundaries you must first be clear on your values and your needs. Know what you are willing to do and not do. Know how to say “no” when something is not right for you, and “yes” when it is. You must understand your needs so that you can be mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. Do you allow yourself time for your own care and needs? If you are not doing this now, chances are you will not do this in dating or in a relationship, and it will be difficult for another person to tap into your healthy personal energy that is the foundation for a good relationship. Springtime Savings: Looking Fabulous on a Budget

It’s easy to go overboard spending-wise when springtime rolls around. All of our gray and black winter frocks seem so boring in contrast to the gorgeous colors that are on full display in every store. But you don’t have to break the bank to look fantastic this season. With my shopping budget of basically $0 (fine, maybe a tiny bit more than that), it’s tough to find ways to update my style. Sticking to accessories is the easiest way for me. You can update what you already have (ie: a little black dress, anything denim, a plain white t-shirt, etc.) with a few great accessories and make a huge difference in the way you look. Here are a few springtime delights that won’t leave you penniless.

Scarves

Buying a few scarves is a great way to step-up your wardrobe in the cheapest way possible. Not only does it warm you up during this transitional period, it also can turn your normal, everyday “blah” look into a totally different outfit. There are countless options out there. I like to go to flea markets and try to find deals, but if you’re wary of that, there are some great finds all over the place! This scarf from Old Navy is on sale for about $11. Mary Richardson has been a pathfinder for women in the news world. Currently the co-host of Chronicle on ABC’s WCVB-TV Channel 5 in Boston, her career followed a coast-to-coast path, which shows, as she says, “that you can have your dreams, and can dare to aspire to bigger things.”

A native Californian, Mary began a career in teaching after completing a degree in English. Upon assigning her students a communications project she began to appreciate her own interest in communications and started attending graduate school at night. The decision to quit teaching to attend school full time and undertake the required internship paved the way to Mary’s future in broadcasting.

Outline is Created and Ready to Write

I’ve recently begun working with the Book Coach, Keith Leon for support in writing my book, “90 Days 2 Love, Transforming Your Life From the Inside Out To Attract Your Soul Mate.” Not only will he support me in the writing process, he will guide me through self-publishing, gathering endorsements, and getting it out there! I am so excited to finally commit to this project that has been brewing inside of me for years!

I’d like to share the journey with you in hope to offer you inspiration for any projects that you may have bubbling inside waiting for expression. It’s not always easy to give yourself permission to follow a dream or passion, and sometimes even when you think you are ready (like I did) still you find yourself stuck and unable to begin or if you do begin, lose momentum and not finish. I realize this has been a challenge for me – to commit and step past my fears – and write this book that is just bursting to be released from the depths of my heart and soul. So, like I have done in the past when I need support, encouragement, guidance, and help with accountability, I enlisted the services of a coach who is an expert in his field – who has walked his talk with success.

So to begin I had to share a bit of myself with Keith and so will share it with you:

Ages of Children: 26, 24, and 22

Education/Experience: BS in Education, master level courses in counseling and financial accounting in addition to several coaching, spiritual, and healing trainings.

Occupation: Relationship Intuitive, Love Strategist

Q: What do you like about your work, and what do you dislike?

A: I love seeing people connect to their hearts and truth, see their worth and value, let go of the emotions keeping them stuck, and begin to attract healthy people into their lives. I love to see the light go on in their eyes.

I am not as keen on the administrative and marketing end of the business – my favorite is speaking, working with clients, and writing.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment and/or the most challenging experience you have ever overcome?

A: There are so many challenging experiences that I have overcome and I am proud to acknowledge that. I was bedridden for 3 years, and another 3 of being down more than up. I was told to expect that I would not live normally due to sever neurological and central nervous system Lyme disease combined with fibromyalgia. I would not accept that, and I live pretty fully now – still challenges to face, yet I am very pleased with my determination, love, and efforts to be here and coaching and help others to heal and attract love today.

Q: What is your greatest passion in life – something that comes easy to you and does not feel like work, it just feels good?

A: Speaking on issues of passion, love, health, and relationships whether to a group or individuals.

Q: What is your life’s vision/mission – what do you want to contribute to the world?

A: I most want to connect millions of people to their own joyful hearts and to love

Q: What is your biggest issue – the thing that drains your energy, stops you, or gets in your way?

A: Fear, doubt, overwhelm – although I have released so much of this lately. Mind fog is especially challenging – some days I just can’t seem to make mind work, yet fortunately that seems to happen less and less – that has been a huge challenge in the past.

Q: What results are you looking for from coaching?

A: Support and guidance in creating and following a schedule especially to include writing, completion, publication and distribution of my book.

Q: What are your definitions of commitment and accountability?

A: Commitment – focus, determination, and vision to what you promise to yourself or others

Accountability – having integrity to do what you agree, yet be realistic with what you can do

Q: How committed are you to being accountable and doing what it takes to achieve the results you desire?

A: I am committed to a 10 – I have asked for support at home so that this is my main focus for the coming months in the area of work. I often get sidetracked with other work projects and I am determined to finally see my book through to completion because I believe it will shift the energy of my business and what I want to accomplish.

Q: What else would you like us to know about you?

A: One of the challenges that I have faced is that I have not honored some of my commitments because I over-commit thinking I can handle it all, and do not have the mental and physical stamina at times. I am striving for balance in my life, and yet it seems I go like crazy, then crash. I am in the process of shifting to more steadiness and constancy, and allowing this to feel normal.

I am fortunate to know that when I truly set my mind, heart, and commitment to something, I will achieve it because I believe in it and me – sometimes it takes awhile to reach that place yet I have found that whatever I believe, whether positive or negative, shows up in my life as truth. I have had to challenge many of my beliefs (even uncover what they actually were) to see what was holding me back in some of the areas of my life, and slowly each area has been shifting to the beliefs that I choose to empower and serve me. I am blessed to have an amazing system of support from people in my life who love me and believe in me – sometimes even when I doubt myself. That is one key to success in every area of your life – it certainly has helped me through the maze of Relating, Dating & Mating among other things.

ANSWER: Ah…the January credit card bill blues! I’m wondering if you have similar thoughts every month when you get your credit card statement; chances are, there are many months when you look at your list of purchases and wonder “what on earth did I buy?” The answer of your discontent lies in your values.

Personal values are those attributes that we hold most near and dear to our hearts. They may include qualities like integrity and honesty, but they will often include elements such as nature, excitement, knowledge, and family. Look on-line for a comprehensive list of values – 100 or more – or you can contact me and I will send you a list. Take a first pass through the list and choose no more than 10. Let that sit for a bit. Now go through the list and narrow the list to 3 or 4. If you are having trouble narrowing it down (and most of us do ), ask yourself what would be the last thing you would give up if you had to? In our last issue, we continued to follow Susan on her weight loss journey with Physician’s Healthy Weight Center (PHWC) and Dr. Warren. Since the last update, Susan has made it through the toughest time of year for anyone trying to get or stay in shape – the holiday season. Even though she encountered some bumps along the way, Susan was still able to stick to her goals and continue to lose weight.

“If you’re like me, whether you were on a diet before the holidays or not, you over indulged,” says Susan. “My husband got a HUGE container full of Godiva and Ghirardelli chocolates, nuts, cookies, all kinds of temptations, so obviously I dove into that a little. Christmas Eve came with all kinds of hors d’oeuvres, and of course we had a big Christmas dinner, and then New Years rolled around. I told myself that was my last day of bad eating habits, so I thought I might as well indulge, because if I didn’t, I knew I would feel deprived. My eating was offset by some intense activity around my house. I completely redid my bedroom, and ripping up old carpet is hard work, about three days worth. As we do on most Sundays, my friends and I gathered for our recap of events that had transpired over the weekend. Usually our talks consist of an exchange of funny things that we had overheard, terrible dancers we saw at the local bars, or (of course) catching up on gossip; however, these usual topics took a backseat this time to instead talking about Stephanie’s love interest, or rather, flavor of the week.

Steph had been playing ‘the game’ with this guy Rob for a few weeks now – they would meet up on the weekends, he would send her a text message if he felt like it – basically, things were going pretty well by college standards. The main problem that Steph encountered was that Rob was almost a phantom: we never saw him during the week. Do you have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear? Chances are it isn’t because you’re lacking clothes, but that you have way too many of them! A clean closet will help you to coordinate outfits more easily, maximize space and better organize your clothes. Here are some tips to help you with your closet make-over:

1. Have the right supplies on-hand including the most important, good hangers. My favorite type is the slim-line hanger—a thin velvet covered hanger that keeps clothes from slipping off. The slim-line can be found in most stores or on-line at www.onlyhangers.com/Cat-122-1-105/Slim-Line_Hangers.htm. Never use the metal drycleaner hangers as they can stretch and ruin clothes. The hottest trend of 2010 is…that there is no trend! Unlike the days of traditional planning, we are now finding that weddings are more about branding the event with the couple’s personal touches in lieu of a standard, cookie-cutter formula. These days, in the world of wedding planning, anything goes! Everything from lighting and party favors to entertainment and food options can contribute to the creation of a trademark for the wedding that speaks to the bride and groom’s specific preferences and interests.

No longer is it necessary for the ceremony to take place in a banquet hall or country club. Couples are thinking more “out of the box” when it comes to venue choices and are using their ceremony location to speak to who they are as individuals as well as a couple. If they have a favorite vacation setting, a family home or a spot where they first met, they may use that as an alternative to the more traditional ballroom — for instance, planning a wedding for two Red Sox fans at Fenway Park! Rose Colored Glasses - The Cheri Factor

For many years I was told that I had no idea of reality because I looked at the world through my rose colored glasses. It was often said in frustration. At times I became defensive at this. I do understand reality, yet I choose to see the world from my rose colored perspective. I would much rather live this way than in the world of judgment and fear. I prefer to see the world and the universe from a loving perspective. I choose to see the good in everyone and believe that we all have light that shines. Some are more dimmed, yet the potential for radiating is always there. I am inclined to trust people and believe in their goodness. I have always preferred to see the glass as half full. I forgive easily and do not stay angry. If this is looking at the world through rose-colored glasses, I will choose this any day.

My son used to call me “Positive Patty” because I refused to consider the negative alternatives and encouraged him always to see the bright side of things. It is just as possible that things will work out, as it is that they will not, I told him. He would say, but I am always disappointed if I expect it to be a certain way. Now I know that my son was correct in his assessment. It is the meaning we attach to the expectations that cause us disappointment. It is being attached to a particular outcome. If I knew then what I know now, I would have listened to what he said more openly and helped him to see that if we are open to the experience and all the good that can come from it, then disappointment is not waiting for us. I think perhaps I knew this intuitively for my own experience, I had not yet learned to express or understand it fully.

When my children were young, I did not know about the Law of Attraction, yet I did know that how we think and having confidence were very important to how our life played out. I did not just think. I also took action. I was so busy taking action toward what I wanted; yet the piece that was missing was hearing what came to me in stillness. I also felt in my body what was right for me, and yet ignored the signals.

So although I was always positive in my thinking, I have come to understand that it is not just having positive thoughts that contribute to how life plays out for us. It is also the underlying beliefs that we have, and the emotions stuck in our body, the energy we hold, and the action we take from these perspectives.

I have always been so fortunate and I learned a long time ago to be grateful for every little thing, and chosen to be happy in spite of any circumstance. I always reached for love. Now I have learned to receive love. I looked for the positive slant, the silver lining, what was good. If that is looking at the world through rose colored glasses, than indeed I do. How about you? Are you ready to put those glasses on?

Sadie's Dating Escapades - Recounting the Color

Sadie is sitting at LaTella’s restaurant with her life long friend, Lindy. She has just recounted how she met Karl, and is ready to relive the wonderful six week fantasy relationship.

“Lindy, why wouldn’t I go to Long Island with him? I had the time available, and what a great opportunity to get over Gary. You know, how hard that was for me to make that decision, and even though I did manage to go through ending things with Gary, it was still hard for me to do.

“I know Sadie, you struggled with that choice. But do you not see that you jumped from one hurtful relationship that, by the way, you jumped into so quickly, and it totally messed up your judgement in ending your marriage. But that’s another conversation, so I will let it be. But honestly, Sadie, you leaped from one situation into another without catching your breath!”

“Lindy. I see that now, but at the airport I wasn’t thinking about anything except how much I was enjoying Karl’s company. I did not go to Long Island with any ideas except that it would be a fun weekend. And, Lindy, it was! You know because I had told you all about it.”

“Yes, Sadie, you did. You were on cloud nine, and honestly, I was happy and excited for you. I felt it was just what you needed. I also thought that you had enough sense to let it be just that, a good time. When you got back from Long Island, you had said good bye to Karl. You spoke to him on the phone a few times, and you seemed to have your wits about you. You went to visit him in Chicago, and the next thing I knew, you were in Florida, and I only heard from you here and there with snippets of the good times you were having. Actually you became euphoric and as the weeks went on, I heard less from you, until of course you crashed. So tell me, Sadie. What happened?”

“Long Island was so much fun as you know, and I really enjoyed his company. I stayed in the hotel room with him, and yet he was completely respectful of my desire to sleep on a separate bed. I enjoyed time alone while he was involved in the charity event, and I even participated a bit myself. We flew back to Boston, said good bye and he continued to Chicago where he lives. He called me regularly, and we had so much fun talking. He was such a cheer leader for me, encouraging me to explore my options of what to do with my life now.

Then one night, when we were talking, he invited me to come for a visit. He offered to put me up in a hotel. There was a dinner where he was being recognized for his volunteer work, and he wanted me to accompany him. You thought it was a good idea, if I remember correctly, LIndy.”

“Yes, I did, Sadie. You were a bit apprehensive about going, and I actually did encourage you to go. I never imagined that you would stay there. I certainly did not anticipate Florida!”

“Ok. So, I met several of Karl’s friends at the Volunteer Recognition. They were so happy that he had met a woman that excited him. One woman, Carmen, pulled me aside, and told me how difficult his divorce had been. He was such a kind man and everyone loved him. His friends and family knew how devastated he was when his wife decided to leave him. The divorce had been finalized for six months, yet it had taken two years to resolve. In all of this time, he had not dated at all, although Carmen had tried to push many woman in front of him. She was so thrilled that I was there, and that he was happy.

“Lindy, my heart started to melt. I knew he had been through a painful divorce, but I had no idea that his inviting me there was a big deal. I also thought that it was time he was having fun with a woman.

Sadie Jackson, a fictional heroine, is back on the dating scene for the third time. After two trial marriages, she is bound and determined to get it right.She can be nauseatingly optimistic and enjoys recounting her dating experiences with humor and compassion.Follow her dating escapades in this work of fiction that will be updated on a regular basis.

Jumpstart Your Love Life – Tips for a New Year and a New Decade

January is a time of reflection and renewal, a time to think consciously about how to approach the New Year. “Approach” is a carefully chosen word, as I advise creating parameters that allow for flexibility rather than concrete resolutions that may become less appropriate over time or be too strict to follow. With the celebration of the arrival of 2010, not only a new year but a new decade, I wish to share with you some of my guidelines for refining your life and bringing love into it – “jumpstarting” a new year, a new you and the new relationships you will encounter in 2010.

Generally, for everyone desiring a more attractive overall life, consider:

1. Be the Love you Seek
Finding love (and this can mean in a mate, your work, your family…) means acting in a loving way. Complaining and cursing everything you encounter in the course of your day is incompatible with attracting love. Censor your language by being more present and aware of what you are saying. Do something positive for yourself and others. Engage in an act of selfless gratitude everyday, such as bringing an office mate a bagel, leaving a note with a happy drawing in your child’s lunchbox or opening a door for someone. If you are already in a romantic partnership with someone, think of little things that you can do that say I care about you. Try a “turn down” service: simply turn down the sheets of a crisply made bed and place a chocolate and/or single flower on your mate’s pillow. It takes all of 2 minutes to do and isn’t expensive—but sends a powerful message of love and gratitude (among other things )—a terrific return on investment! Smile more. Hug more. Listen more.

2. Seek Balance
Have you noticed a popular theme in the media touting the benefits of a balanced mind, body and spirit? Are you balanced in this regard or are you too far into one or two dimensions but not all three? Have your passions transmuted into simply the pursuit of financial success? Do you feel guilty when you do something for yourself rather than for your mate, your family, or your business?

Take time for self—everyday. It might be a small action like reading the morning paper over a cup of steaming coffee—alone. It might be a run, a yoga session, or a candlelit bath at the end of a productive day. Write in three activities for everyday living that will feed your body, mind, and spirit. If three every day seems daunting, try one a day or three things weekly. Remember that muscle doesn’t grow without rest; rest your mind, your body or your spirit while you “exercise” the other two parts of your being and the rested part grows! A balanced being is an attractive being.

3. Get Passionate About You and Your Life
What makes you tick? Think back to when you were young, what did you love to do. What feeds your soul? This is a time to reconnect to your center and put attention on those things that make your heart sing. If you are living a passionate life, this will reflect to those around you. You will also meet more passionate people. When you feed your soul, you are a kinder more loving person to yourself and therefore to others and to the world.

4. Listen Up
A major key to relationship success is communication, and one key to effective communication is listening. If you are not a good listener, make it a priority to learn. Rather than interrupting, breathe deeply and give each person the gift of your attention. It is sometimes tempting to want to tell people what they should do or how much you know instead of letting someone finish speaking. Pledge to become a master of this skill of listening and you will see all your relationships flourish. When you do speak, rather than telling someone else what they are doing or not doing right, consider complimenting them first, and then suggest how you feel when they act in a certain way.

Now for those of you actively seeking a romantic partnership, consider:

1. Think Outside the Box
Stop frantically searching and start energetically attracting. My practice is founded on my clients first knowing themselves—inside and out—and then clearly defining what they want in a mate. Confusion can arise when clients misunderstand what this clear definition means. It doesn’t mean trying to retrofit people into the Idea of relationship or marriage. It means understanding what a healthy relationship looks like for you. You’ve had lots of practice in life of what is right and what is not. Focus your attention on what is right, what works for you. Don’t let your desire for couplehood override the imperative of finding the right relationship for you. It is better to be alone than to be with the wrong person. My clients who have progressed through my programs emerge knowing and liking themselves so much more than ever before in their lives that they report to me they naturally no longer settle for the wrong relationships and are successfully finding healthy, loving relationships with people who are perfect for them.

2. Get Out!
While online dating and social networking sites are almost imperative for busy professionals, people who work at home, or simply people who don’t have a lot of single friends with whom to network, you still have to get out from behind the computer. Nothing compares to live social interaction.
Take advantage of your time in the grocery store or bank by smiling and engaging people in conversation. Go to a park and walk a dog (borrow dogs as needed). Take a class that interests you. Work on your laptop at the local coffee shop or library. Go to a gym. VOLUNTEER. Get out everyday.
Smile! Don’t underestimate the power of a smile. If you’re female, compliment another woman on her shoes; you might make a friend. Welcome new neighbors, you never know when an attractive, single brother has just moved to the area and needs some new friends. Ask someone for directions, or how the traffic is on the highway. Be genuine, and if nothing else comes to mind a simply say, “hello!”
Here’s a surefire tip to motivate you to get out: pledge to turn off the television and your home computer for a week. Suddenly, the outside world will look far more appealing!

3. Take Chances
Do something new. Attend and event that you really want to attend alone if none of your friends can go with you. If you do really like someone, tell them. Again, if you’ve done the preliminary work on yourself, you simply won’t give off a “desperate” vibe because you aren’t! So go ahead and call someone for a second date—whenever the mood strikes you and not some pre-defined window after the first one. Send them an e-mail and tell them how much you enjoyed their company. Like any good thank you letter, mention something about which the two of you connected that opens the conversation for a future date, “You know so much about music. [Insert band] is playing [location, time], I’d love it if you’d come with me.” The trick is that you’ve spoken casually, using words you would actually speak, and you’ve indicated that you’re going anyway.

Commit to putting some of these ideas into play in 2010 and watch as you naturally attract new positive possibilities and love in your life!

Sadie's Dating Escapades - False Advertisement

“Oh, good Lord! That cannot possibly be the man I am meeting tonight,” I exclaimed out loud to no one in particular.

“Excuse me,” I said to the waiter passing by, ““Is that portly man, and I am being kind, mind you, waiting for anyone in particular?”

Before the waiter could answer, the man in question turned towards me with a wide smile, “Hello Sadie, I am so glad to see you!”

“Are you Dave?” I asked incredulously.

“Yes, I am,” he answered with a smile, and a bit of a mischievous twinkle in his eye, I might add.

I could only manage a whimper as I walked towards him. Before I even sat down I ordered a Gray Goose martini, extra dry from the bartender. If this was a joke, I was not amused, and if it was for real, I needed fortification, and quickly.

“Hello, Dave. Have you been waiting long?” I asked as I put my hand out in greeting.

“Not long at all. You look lovely,” was his reply.

We chatted about nothing much at all as I settled in and anxiously awaited the arrival of my martini. Now, I am not usually a heavy drinker. Generally, I enjoy lingering over a lovely red wine. However, I was not prepared for the scene that was unfolding, and I just needed to relax quickly, or else I was bound to just turn around and walk right out. I was here to meet the handsome man from Match.com whom I had been emailing and talking to for the past couple of weeks. The only problem is that the man before me and the picture of the man I was expecting to see were so completely different. So, to be fair, I was in a bit of shock.

“Here, you go miss,” said the waiter as he placed my drink before me. “Thank heavens,” I said as I held my glass to Dave’s, and swallowed a large sip of icy comfort.

“Who are you?” I finally blurted out. “Was the real Dave unable to make it tonight and sent you in his place instead? Because you most certainly are not the man in the profile of whom I’ve been communicating with.”

“I assure you that I am the man that you have been talking with and swapping emails. I am the man that had you laughing till you cried. Don’t you recognize my voice?” he asked.

To which I responded, “I am still in shock over your dishonesty to notice your voice. Why would you do such a creepy thing?” I wanted to know. Tactfulness is not one of my top 10 qualities.

“If I had posted my real picture, would you have even given me the time of day, Sadie?” he asked.

“Probably not,” was my honest reply.

“My point. Think about the past couple of weeks and how enjoyable our conversations have been. You would not have experienced that if you’d cheated yourself because of how I looked. Are you really that shallow?” he asked me pointedly.

“I am not shallow at all, and I am also not a liar. What you did is wrong. If you were capable of this deceit, what else would you do? How do you expect to enter into any relationship starting out on that foot?’ I replied.

“Well, first of all, we are just meeting for a meal, and we’ve had a few engaging conversations. So I thought we’d have a few laughs over dinner. What’s the worst thing that we don’t hit it off? So we both had a social evening, and we go our separate ways. There is the possibility that we will enjoy tonight so much, we’ll want to see each other again. So, what is so wrong that?”

OK READERS. LET ME HEAR FROM YOU. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION? IS WHAT DAVE DID WRONG? SHOULD SADIE LET IT GO SINCE SHE OBVIOUSLY ENJOYED HIS COMPANY THINKING HE LOOKED DIFFERENTLY? HAVE YOU HAD THIS EXPERIENCE? I'D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT.

Applaud - 2009 - A Reflection on a Year of Positive Change

The last year started out with Applaud as Applaud Magazine, in print for the 6th year. As with many other print magazines things looked pretty bleak. Postage and printing costs had been rising for years and with a bad economy advertising revenue had sunk to the lowest level since I created the magazine in 2002. However, I am lucky to be doing something that I am passionate about; lucky that I enjoy learning new things and that I’m stubborn. I don’t like to give up. I think the businesses who are open minded and pay attention to new trends are the ones who will survive. Again, I am lucky that the trend is a shift to the internet for information, which is what I have to offer and in the use of social networking to market businesses. Another lucky thing for me was that I had already decided that 2009 was going to be a change for me, rather a positive change. That decision lead to the creation of a brand new website to house our on-line publication for women in NH and northern MA.

Although I have never designed a website before I was able to find a user-friendly software and use my design skills to accomplish this task. Once the website was designed it opened up a whole new world allowing me to offer a huge amount of information for local women, a whole new community with listings of restaurants throughout NH and MA; Hotels in NH (MA will be added in 2010); A massive Wedding Resource Center; Our female doctor listing for NH & MA (making it easier for local women to find the female doctors available in their area); Seasonal activities; and finally our Women Biz directory. In addition we have a number of informational pages with articles relating to Beauty, Health, Fashion, Celebrities and tons more. Many of the information pages have RSS feeds from either local or national websites. The new concept is for local women to find everything they need in one place, making it easier and quicker for them to find the information they need or want to find. Last year we were Applaud Magazine, one small vehicle providing local women with a fraction of the information that we are now able to provide them on Applaud Women. What a huge difference from this time last year!

So my advice for those of you who have had a tough year is to keep your mind open; know when you need to make a change and if you love what you’re doing – don’t quit.

The HPV Virus Vaccine - Who Should Get It?

This vaccine is called Gardasil® and has been available since the spring of 2006. HPV is a virus that is spread by skin to skin contact, most commonly via sexual contact. It is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the nation. It is estimated that up to 80% of sexually active persons will be infected with this virus. There are high grade strains and low grade strains. The high grade strains are those that can lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, penis and anus. Nearly 4,000 women die yearly in the United States from cervical cancer. The low grade represent those that can lead to ano-genital warts.

Rainy Day Activities for Parents & Children

Here is an article by Angela Hughes - Mom Extraordinaire. Angela writes a column for parents in each issue of Applaud Women. Since we have had so much rain over the summer we thought this would be a helpful article for parents to read. Here is one of the activities that Angela has suggested.

1. Make a Paper Mache World Globe and label it. There isn’t a kid around that doesn’t like to get their hands sticky with a glue paste and ripped up newspaper. This craft is fun to paint and even more fun to make.

Supplies needed:

A round balloon
Lots of newspaper
Flour and water glue (instructions below)
A container for mixing the glue (old plastic containers work well)
A spoon or stick to stir the glue
A printer
Pencil
Blue and green tempera paint
Paint brushes
A dark marker

Make simple, thin glue from flour and water. Mix 1 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 4 cups of boiling water (the heating gives the
glue a nice consistency, but is not
necessary).

Simmer for about 3 minutes, and then cool.

Tear a lot of strips of newspaper.

Strips should be about 1 inch wide; the length doesn’t really matter.

Blow up and tie a round balloon for each student.

Papier-Mâché: Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue, wipe off excess, and wrap the strip around the balloon. Have at least three layers surrounding the balloon. Let it dry (at least overnight) after each layer.

Let the globe dry completely (it may take a few days). When the papier-mâché is dry, the balloon usually pops by itself, and separates from the outer papier-mâché skin.
Paint the globe with tempura paints and label accordingly.

Enjoy Being Single While Preparing for Love

In the pursuit for love you must first tap into the source of it and rather than looking outside of yourself wishing and hoping for others to love you, look inside and find where it has resided all along.

Here’s the thing, when you so badly want to be loved and yet you are not yet being love yourself, it its nearly impossible to find it. When you are single you have an opportunity to create your life - to practice embracing the present moment and live life fully and by your terms. This is such a great time for you to take the time to really know yourself deeply and intimately, accept you fully - all of you, improve the relationships that exist and create a loving and supportive network.

This is the time to create your life’s vision, discover your passions and start living them, understand your purpose and what makes you tick. This is the time to begin to strategically create and attract the life and love that you desire.

This is the time to define your requirements for a partner. You decide with conscious clarity how you want to relate and be treated in a relationship. You decide what values are the most important to you and what features are non-negotiable in order for you to know that a person is the right one for you in a relationship. You create the environment in which you know you will thrive and can enjoy life long sustaining love.

Enjoy the relationships that exist now, dwell in the possibilities, revel in the time alone and create some time that you are willing to share with the right partner for you.

Reflect on Sadness

Today I am reflective. I want to make sense of my sadness when by all accounts, I should be happy. I am living in a great community, meeting new people. I live in a spacious condo on the water, decorated with my new sense of experimental style. I have an opportunity to decide what I would like to do for a career, yet there is no hurry. I can enjoy this time of space and suspension. Yet, I don’t. I miss the people who should be filling up the space here with me. I do not know how to make the ache go away.

Suddenly, it hit me. I don’t think that I ever really believed that a man would love me completely. So if I have this deep mistrust of being loved, it is no wonder that all my relationships end the same way - over. I think I have always worried that once someone really gets to know me, they will not like me, and guess what, that has been so true. In both of my marriages, and in my last great fling, again, it was true.

I am not sure that I even want to spend the time of seeing where this might be true in my first marriage. It was so long ago, and I don’t feel any pain there. I was so young, the circumstances so very typical for being that young and for my time. I thought I was marrying someone different from what I knew. He was not. His family was what I thought I wanted, and I naively believed that he was like his family and my life would be like that. Of course, I did have his family, I just did not have him. I also have the gift of the child we created.

My second marriage, I got a little smarter in knowing what I wanted in a man. I got what I wanted to the extent I knew what that was. I also did not heed the warning signs. I was so grateful to be with someone who I ordained to be a god next to me, that I lost sight of me completely, for a while, anyway. I always thought he was better than me, and by the time I realized that neither of us was better, we were both different, I also tired of the constant struggle of power. Although I lost sight of myself several times in that marriage, I also found myself, too. Of course, there was so much good, too. I prefer to remember why I loved him, why I stayed so long. But then, I have to remind myself there was a reason it ended. So, I look at it only to raise myself from self-doubt, blame and guilt.

I also want to make sense so I can do it right finally. I wonder if that is even possible. LIndy tells me it is. I want to believe her. Yet, based on the men I have been meeting lately, I can’t help but wonder how. The way I have been acting lately, I am sure it is not. I need to gather my courage and strength and learn how to enjoy being alone. I used to think I was special and had so much to offer, and lately I cannot help wondering if this is still true.

I am terrified of making another mistake with a man. I certainly know what I do not want in a relationship. I have lots of practice there. In the last year, I have had even more exposure to what I do not even want in a dating relationship, never mind a permanent one. Maybe it is time, to look at things differently. After all, one can always hope.

Laughter - One of the Best Stress Reducers

I don’t usually share funny stories here but I think this one is worth sharing and it’s too long to write in Facebook. So we start from the premise that laughter is one of the best stress reducers ever. And, another thing that I have learned is that we need to give our inner child the rein occasionally because if we don’t she or he will break free when you least expect it and cause utter havoc. You can’t just put him or her in a closet and expect to never hear from them again. Children don’t have eternal patience and neither do your inner children.

So having learned from my father and grandfather how to safely let my inner child go free and that stress is a great way to keep things mellow I occasionally create funny situations in my home. My husband thank goodness shares my humor.

So for the funny story. My husband was getting ready to go out, putting on his sneakers, in fact. There was a pile of change on the dining room table and when he wasn’t looking I put it in his sneaker. Now normally this would be pretty funny when he put his foot in the sneaker but nothing happened. He laced up and stood to leave. Meanwhile I am on the deck viewing this and beginning to burst with laughter. Having known me for years he understand the signs and knows I did something.
He finally realizes that his foot doesn’t fit quite right and knows what I have done. We are now hysterically laughing. This little trick provided more laughter then I had anticipated.

So you say, I’m not laughing here. Guess this must be one of those locations jokes. If you don’t walk away laughing I hope this will serve to give you permission to bring a little silliness and laughter into your home during a time when many of us need it.

Finding Something Positive on a Gloomy Day

I’ve been really trying to figure out how to keep my spirits up with all this gloomy weather. It’s bad enough for normal people but I’m one of the Seasonal Affective Disorder people. So when the sun isn’t out my energy and mood are pretty low. Yesterday was a serious chocolate crisis day. When I got up this morning to another rainy day I decided that I needed to try something else before I blow up into a balloon and float away (Wait a minute maybe I could float above the clouds).

I decided this morning that I needed to start focusing on the little things that brought a smile or laugh. For instance - My miniature dachshund eats to quickly. We mentioned this to our vet who advised us to buy this plastic dispenser that forces him to take more time to eat. So this morning I decided to try him at it. It’s a giant (almost half his size) purple plastic egg that screws together with the food in the middle and two holes on either side. It was so funny to watch him batty it around. At one point he managed to pick it up in his teeth by the lip of one side and throw it. Definitely took longer for him to get his food down and was a hoot to watch.

So I guess this bad weather has made it possible for me to enjoy the little things in life that I would have rushed through. Not too shabby.

I recently read a blog with advice on planning your summer vacation. According to the blogger rather then choosing a place to travel to and then planning what to do, you should first decide what you want to do and then plan where to go. Here is what he has to say:

NH State Liquor Commission Announces Modernization Changes

Highlights of Modernization Act Provisions:

MANAGEMENT REORGANIZATION – New laws reorganize the management structure of the Commission to create three more accountable senior management areas: a division of marketing, merchandising, and warehousing; division of administration; and a division of enforcement and licensing.

CREATES AN ENTERPRISE FUND – New laws permit the Commission to operate more like a business by establishing it as an Enterprise Fund.

REDUCE LICENSING “RED TAPE” – Provision of new laws will allow the commission to simplify and streamline the existing process to obtain most licenses and will begin the process of consolidating the more than 50 license types.

AGENCY STORES EXPANSION – Permits the Commission to permit the sale of spirits in up to eight new grocery or convenience stores. It is the Commission’s intent to begin a limited pilot program of distribution expansion to access its effectiveness and to allow for community input.

NEW PRODUCTS – Permits the Commission to more readily purchase, and offer for sale, products related to wine and spirits such as gift baskets, cork screws, recycling bags, glasses, etc.

EASE RESTRICTIONS ON CHARITY/NON-PROFIT WINE TASTING EVENTS – A new license category can be used to ease the regulatory process of conducting charity wine tastings.

About the NH Liquor Commission
Founded in 1934, the NH Liquor Commission is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. New Hampshire is one of 18 Control States in the nation, where the government controls the distribution of alcoholic beverages as well as being responsible for the regulation of alcoholic beverages. The Liquor Commission operates 77 retail locations. Total sales for FY 2009 are expected to exceed $500 million – up 6% over the previous year. Total profits for the year are up 10%.

I was really pleased to hear that one of my favorite Dancing With The Stars, stars, Melissa Rycroft has joined ABC News. According to ABC, Former Bachelor; and Dancing with the Stars; Contestant, Melissa Rycroft, Joined ABC’s; Good Morning America; As Special Contributor this morning. She certainly has bounced back after taking the boot from the Bachelor. You know what they say, when one door shuts, another opens - and another - and another. We applaud you Melissa.

Other great news, which actually came as a surprise to me, probably since there were no pregnancy sightings due to the twins coming by surrogate - is the birth of Sarah Jessica and Mathew Broderick’s new babies. I’m really curious about why they choose that route but you know, it really isn’t any of my business.

And, finally a real shocker - Mathew McConaughey will be a dad again and apparently he’s loving it. His son Levi is just 11 months old and partner Brazilian model Camila Alves is pregnant again.

An Inspirational Story

I was reading through my Google Alerts today and found this wonderful story on another blog. To give credit is was on Crista’s blog, location Utopia. And here is the story.

I like that story about the fellow who went to the pet store in search of a singing parakeet. Seems he was a bachelor and his house was too quiet. The store owner had just the bird for him, so the man bought it. The next day the bachelor came home from work to a house full of music. He went to the cage to feed the bird and noticed for the first time that the parakeet had only one leg.

He felt cheated that he’d been sold a one-legged bird, so he called and complained.

“What do you want,” the store owner responded, “a bird who can sing or a bird who can dance?”
Good question for times of disappointment.

Two Sides of Being Alone

These past weeks have been such a struggle between loneliness and wanting to be alone. How does that make sense? One moment I am enjoying my freedom, the space to be just me. I turn up the music very loudly and dance around the room as if no one is watching me. Then it occurs to me that no one is watching me since I am all alone. Oh the sadness of it all!

Another day, I revel in how much I am enjoying plastering posters on all the walls as I sketch out new designs for my dream house, adding details as inspiration strikes me. Then sadness once again seeps in as I wonder if I will live in it by myself. Then I perk up as I affirm how joyful it is that I could build a home totally to my own specifications without having to consider another’s opinion. In another moment, I want someone else’s ideas to flow with mine.

Oh the bother of it all! Why can’t I just enjoy being alone? I am told this is a wonderful time for me to really enjoy my life. I can spend time with friends, do whatever I want, and discover my true essence. Although, I am not sure I really want to know what that is. I am afraid I may like that Sadie even less than I am liking this one.

Of course, Lindy tells me that I may like that Sadie even more, and that I am terrified of that possibility. I laugh at the absurdity of that. Yet, when I am in the throes of despair, as I often seem to be, I wonder, could she be right?

Sadie Jackson, a fictional heroine, is back on the dating scene for the third time. After two trial marriages, she is bound and determined to get it right.She can be nauseatingly optimistic and enjoys recounting her dating experiences with humor and compassion.Follow her dating escapades in this work of fiction that will be updated on a regular basis. Making Faces making faces for you
Firm now offers home parties

PORTSMOUTH, NH — Making Faces is now making faces in your own living room.
Seven years old this year and incredibly successful, Making Faces is offering a new and fun service to its patrons.

“We have just begun launching home parties,” said Annie Loomis, owner of the two Making Faces stores. “We started a few weeks ago to a small group to see if they liked the concept. They did and it’s full speed ahead.”

The concept is not a new one, but a new one for Making Faces. The hostess of the party lets the Making Faces teams into her home and invites some friends. They do this at-home party only on Thursdays or by special arrangement.

“It’s a different sort of delivery,” said Loomis. “The party is from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. and we practically bring the whole store to the home.”

The at-home parties offer a skin clinic for education and the 10 commandments of skin care is explained in detail. Two of the Making Faces staff give each attendee a five-minute one-on-one for makeup. It runs the gamut from skin bronzers to makeup and more. Lots more.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt may or may not be breaking up depending on which tabloid you read. It's been my experience that when rumors start surfacing there is trouble brewing. I"m a Jennifer Aniston fan myself so I'd be happy to see the home wrecker ditched. I did hear that it was the other way around though.

Did a glitch or scam on UTube cause Susan Boyle to come in second in Britain's Got Talent when she really should have won? Noone will except responsibility for it but her supporters do report that they tried to get through on phone lines and couldn't. And, apparently the dance group won with less then a 5% difference in scores.

Susan Boyle is resting and being visited by her cat. Simon Cowell is adamant that Susan Boyle will be on tour if and when she is feeling up to it.Amanda Holden, another of the BGT judges stated that Susan's not winning was probably a blessing. Amanda said: "She has gone from a woman that nobody knew to worldwide fame. "For anybody in the business to handle that kind of stress is an enormous amount of pressure. I think she probably just crumbled under it. "She will just need some time to recuperate. It's probably a blessing she didn't win as it takes off some of the pressure. Perhaps now she can relax."---I sincerely hope that we can continue to hear Susan sing but that she has someone helping her deal with these pressures in the future. She is an exceptional talent and an inspiring woman.

Finally sad news from Bankok where David Carradine was scheduled to begin filming a movie. He was found dead in his hotel room after not showing up for dinner on Wednesday night. Apparently he committed suicide by hanging himself with a curtain cord. He was only 72. Police say that there were signs of a struggle but no other news is available at this point. He is one of those stars who is irreplaceable.

NH Governor John Lynch Nominates Carol Ann Conroy to State Supreme Court

According to a recent article by the Union Leader, Governor John Lynch as nominated Carol Ann Conboy of Bow to replace Justice Richard Galway on the State Supreme Court.

"As a Superior Court Judge Carol Ann Conboy has distinguished herself through her judicial temperament and in-depth knowledge of the law, more than proving her qualifications," Gov. Lynch said. "She has a diverse background, and brings to the courtroom a fair and balanced approach and an unwavering commitment to justice."

Her nomination must still be confirmed by the Executive Council

Superior Court Justice Conboy to Receive Achievement Award

October 8, 2008-- The New Hampshire Women's Bar Association (NHWBA) has selected the Honorable Carol Ann Conboy to receive the 2008 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award. The award will be given to Judge Conboy at the NHWBA's annual Fall Reception on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, which will be held at the Centennial Inn in Concord from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The achievement award, which is named in honor of Marilla M. Ricker, the first woman to apply for admission to the New Hampshire bar, honors outstanding women lawyers in New Hampshire who have achieved professional excellence or paved the way to success for other women lawyers or advanced opportunities for women in the profession or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.

Judge Conboy was nominated for this award for the many achievements she has accomplished in her career, which began as a federal court law clerk and continued as an associate and then partner in McLane, Graf, Raulerson and Middleton, where she concentrated on employment law litigation. She was appointed to the Superior Court bench by Governor Judd Gregg in 1992.

I'm A Celebrity - Let Me Out of Here

I just had to share my opinion of this new TV Show. I don’t usually watch reality TV unless it’s about Talent - Dancing, Singing etc. American Idol is one of my favorite shows. But I like Lou Diamond Philips and Sanjaya (not crazy about the new haircut thought), so I thought it might be fun. I’ve watch The Hills a couple of times because I know it’s popular so I recognized Heidi and Spencer Pratt.

I have no idea if Spencer is really such a jerk in real life or if his behavior was just for the benefit of ‘reality’ but I finally shut it off before the ending because it was so unentertaining as to be stressful. Is that how privileged people really act?

I was on the fence about watching The Hills. I like to keep up with shows that are popular but after seeing those two in action last night - Let Me Out of Here. The comments that Spencer was making about the other participants were beyond rude.
Well enough of this. I need to get back to important stuff. Would love to hear comments though.

Susan Boyle, the Hairy Angel, who came in second in Britain's Got Talent on Saturday night is now in The Priory Clinic in London. Britain newspaper reporters say she began to behave erratically after her Saturday night loss to the dance group "Diversity." She was taken to the private clinic under police escort.

One of the show's judges, Piers Morgan, said Monday that Boyle, 48, was emotionally drained and exhausted. "Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it," he told GMTV. "It has been crazy, she has gone from anonymity to being the most downloaded woman in history," he said. "She was very tired and hasn't been sleeping. She has just gone away to have some time to herself and to sleep and eat, doing all the things she hasn't been able to do in the last week."

The Britain's Got Talent final on Saturday became Britain's most-watched television program for five years, the Press Association news agency reported, with a peak of 19.2 million viewers. Diversity, the winners, took 24.9 percent of the public vote in the final, above Boyle's 20.2 percent share. Just under four million people voted, according to ITV, the channel that aired the final show. But then, the British public can do unexpected things. They voted Churchill out as Prime Minister after he had led the nation through the Second World War.

Like many others, we've been surprised by Susan's ability, cheered her on, got a bit tired of her and the super-hype surrounding her. But, like most Americans who have not seen all the acts in the show, we expected - and wanted - her to win. Now we just want her to take what she wants from her sudden enormous fame and not let her dream turn into a nightmare. Get well, Susan, and make that CD one we all want to buy.

I totally agree with the final paragraph. If you read Susan's biography on Wikipedia you realize what an amazing and courageous woman she is. As Simon said in his final comments she could have just walked away from the final performance and still had a career in America but she persevered proving that the stories of her emotional collapse 'were greatly exaggerated'. Susan is the kind of woman that we at Applaud Women find inspiring. She is a true Cinderella story not because of her turning into a princess but from her talent and courage. These are the women's stories that we want to bring to women in NH and MA so that we all see what can be accomplished if we just keep dreaming and working towards our dreams. Children Can Earn A Free Book For Reading This Summer

A brief look at this year's Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program for school-age children, including resources for parents.

Barnes and Noble's 2009 Children's Summer Reading Program is in full swing. Beginning on May 26 and running through September 7, 2009, young readers have an opportunity to read during their summer vacation and earn a free book with the completion of the program.
How Barnes and Noble's Summer Reading Program Works
The program is open to any child wishing to participate, specifically those in grades one through six.
• Kids are required to read eight books of their choosing throughout their summer vacation. A list of recommended titles, arranged by grade level, is provided in the Summer Reading Journal.
• Parents can help their children download the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Journal from their website. The journal is available in both English and Spanish.
• Children are required to log each book read by author and title in their Summer Reading Journal. For each book read, kids will list their favorite part of the story.
• When all eight books are read and logged, parents sign off on the Journal and return it to their local Barnes and Noble book store.
Barnes and Noble's Summer Reading Program Rewards Children with Free Book
Children who successfully read all eight books and return their signed and completed journal to their local Barnes and Noble book store will receive a coupon for a free paperback book. A list of eligible titles are printed on the free book coupon and kids can choose their favorite among the available titles.
As an added bonus, kids also have the chance to win an autographed copy of the final Percy Jackson book, The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan. No separate entry form is needed, their journal serves as an entry ticket.
Summer Reading Program Resources for Parents
Barnes and Noble offers additional resources for parents who want to get the most out of their kids' summer reading. Four additional activities are included in the Summer Reading Journal including a section where children can list their favorite authors, illustrators and titles, helping them to discover other books they might enjoy, a way to keep track of fiction and non-fiction titles (as well as different genres) they have read over the summer, a mythology matching game to help kids learn about characters in mythology and an opportunity for young readers to create their own adventure story. So here's the latest in reality TV Premiering for the Summer. I'm not usually into reality TV except for dancing, singing and other performances but I just might give this one a try. Here's the description according to the show website:

Arts Weekend at Etz Hayim Synagogue

By admin Tallit Etz Hayim Synagogue of Derry, New Hampshire will host an arts weekend, “Traditions and Visions of the Changing Role of Art in a Jewish Community” on Friday, May 29 from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will showcase unique Jewish visual art and ritual objects from within the community.

Musician Rahel Limor will present “A Modern Approach to Ancient Spiritual Music” on Saturday, May 30 at 5:30 p.m. Frann S. Addison will speak on the topic of “The History of Jewish Ceremonial Objects” on Saturday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m.

The display will include examples of the prayer shawl, Hanukah candle holder and microcalligraphy from artists Amalia Flaisher, Joan Vick, Moishe Ragieme, Nurit Niskala-Graziani, and Rahel Limor, as well as from the collections of synagogue members.

The Jewish prayer shawl (“tallit” or “tallis”) can be made in a wide variety of materials, designs and sizes. In this display, the prayer shawls are handmade, rainbow style, antiques, children’s shawls, and innovative, contemporary designs for both men and women. There are often meaningful personal stories to go along with these beautiful ritual pieces. The exhibit will showcase the evolution of the prayer shawl and explain the background behind these changes.

The Hanukah candle holder (“menorah” or “hanukiah”). The exhibit will feature this object’s changes over the years with a range of sizes, types, colors and materials.
Microcalligraphy developed in the 9th century as a uniquely Jewish art form. It uses very small writing from a section of scripture (usually in Hebrew) to form an illustration.

This event is open to the public and everyone is invited to visit this event.

The New York Times is reporting that American Idol's Kris Allen may have had a little help from AT&T, one of the Fox show's biggest corporate sponsors, in winning this year.

According to the Times, AT&T provided phones for free text-messaging services at two Allen parties in Arkansas on the night of the finals. Citing sources, The Times reports that AT&T reps showed party-goers how to "power text" -- cast 10 votes at the touch of a button -- which violates show rules.

Power texts, according to the Times, "have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the shows toll-free phone lines."

No similar efforts appear to have been made to provide free texting services to Adam Lambert fans.

Angry Lambert supporters are now claiming in online chat boards that the competition's voting was rigged.

While Fox has yet to comment, AT&T issued the following statement: "In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested."

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette first reported on the possible skewed voting last week.

Normally I don't make any negative comments or share something of a negative nature. I truly believe that we get back what we give out and I promote positive energy because that's what I want in return. But every once in a while something happens that I feel needs sharing. If this is true that ATT employees skewed the American Idol results then that is not right. This is supposed to be a talent contest and it is supposed to be determined by fair voting not skewed because of technical capabilities of one company. Big business is not supposed to be in control of this country, TV or anything else. I don't blame the people who did the block voting but I certainly blame the company that might have made it possible. I would really like to know what ATT and against Adam Lambert. Let me repeat - this is a talent competition, not a lifestyle one. I'm a little embarrassed now to say that ATT provides my cell service.
To leave this on a positive note - I really liked Kris. He seems like a really nice guy and did some great work. I just don't think he earned the top spot. These are my personal viewpoints not that of Applaudwomen.com

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama named federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

Obama said Sotomayor has more experience as a judge than any current member of the high court had when nominated, adding she has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench," the admiration of lawyers who appear in her court and "the adoration of her clerks."

"My heart today is bursting with gratitude," Sotomayor said from the White House podium moments after being introduced by Obama.

If confirmed by the Senate, she would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman on the current court, the third in history. She would succeed retiring Justice David Souter.

She would be unlikely to alter the ideological balance of the court, since Souter generally sides with the liberals on key 5-4 rulings. But at 54, she is a generation younger that Souter, and liberal outside groups hope she will provide a counterpoint to some of the sharply worded conservative rulings.

Obama and Sotomayor both noted the historic nature of the appointment. The president said a Hispanic on the court would mark another step toward the goal of "equal justice under law."

Obama and Sotomayor stood with Vice President Joe Biden. It was a striking picture of diversity: a black president, a white vice president and a Hispanic nominee to the nation's highest court.

Sotomayor said she grew up in poor surroundings and never dreamed she would one day be nominated for the highest court.

Obama has said he hopes she can take her place before the justices begin their new term in October.
Democrats hold a large majority in the Senate, and barring the unexpected, Sotomayor's confirmation should be assured.

The Senate Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, issued a statement that said: "Senate Republicans will treat Judge Sotomayor fairly. But we will thoroughly examine her record to ensure she understands that the role of a jurist in our democracy is to apply the law evenhandedly, despite their own feelings or personal or political preferences."

In his remarks, Obama made no mention of his earlier statement that he wanted a justice with empathy, although his remark that compassion was needed came close.
Sotomayor's nomination opens a new phase in the drive to replace Souter, as liberal and conservative groups alike scour the record she has compiled in 17 years on the federal bench.

In one of Sotomayor's most notable decisions, as an appellate judge she sided last year with the city of New Haven, Conn., in a discrimination case brought by white firefighters. The city threw out results of a promotion exam because too few minorities scored high enough. Coincidentally, that case is now before the Supreme Court.

That ruling has already drawn criticism from conservatives, and is likely to play a role in her confirmation hearing.

In one of her most memorable rulings as federal district judge, in 1995, Sotomayor ruled with Major League Baseball players over owners in a labor strike that had led to the cancellation of the World Series.

Obama referred to that in his remarks, then joked he hoped her support for the Yankees would not unduly influence New Englanders to oppose her in the Senate.
Among them is Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who said, "The American people will want the Senate to carry out its constitutional duty with conscientiousness and civility."

Sotomayor grew up in New York after her parents moved from Puerto Rico. She has dealt with diabetes since age 8 and lost her father at age 9, growing up under the care of her mother in humble surroundings. As a girl, inspired by the Perry Mason television show, she knew she wanted to be a judge.

A graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, a former prosecutor and private attorney, Sotomayor became a federal judge for the Southern District of New York in 1992. She became an appeals judge in 1998 for the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers New York, Vermont and Connecticut.

She was first appointed by a Republican, President George H.W. Bush, and won Senate confirmation without dissent. She was named an appeals judge by President Bill Clinton in 1997.

At her Senate confirmation hearing more than a decade ago, she said, "I don't believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it."

Obama's nomination is the first by a Democratic president in 15 years.

His announcement leaves the Senate four months — more than enough by traditional standards — to complete confirmation proceedings before the court begins its next term in the fall.
Republicans have issued conflicting signals about their intentions. While some have threatened filibusters if they deemed Obama's pick too liberal, others have said that is unlikely.

Given Sotomayor's selection, any decision to filibuster would presumably carry political risks — Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of the population and an increasingly important one politically.

One conservative group did not wait for the formal announcement. Wendy Long of the Judicial Confirmation Network, issued a statement calling Sotomayor a "liberal judicial activist of the first order who thinks her own personal political agenda is more important that the law as written."

Abortion rights have been a flashpoint in several recent Supreme Court confirmations, although Sotomayor has not written any controversial rulings on the subject.

As a federal appeals court judge in 2002, she ruled against an abortion rights group that had challenged a government policy prohibiting foreign organizations receiving U.S. funds from performing or supporting abortions.

In her opinion, Sotomayor wrote that the government was free to favor the anti-abortion position over a pro-choice position when public funds were involved.
Sotomayor's elevation to the appeals court was delayed by Republicans, in part out of concerns she might someday be selected for the Supreme Court. She was ultimately confirmed for the appeals court in 1998 on a 68-28 vote, gathering some Republican support.

Among those voting against her was Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, now the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee that will hold sway over her confirmation.
"I'd say the stakes are higher for the Supreme Court," he said recently. "The Supreme Court sometimes seems to be acting as a continuing constitutional convention, so I am concerned about that." He said Sotomayor would be entitled to a fair hearing if nominated.

Sotomayor possesses credentials Sessions said he wanted in a pick for the high court — years of experience on the bench. Obama had talked openly about the upside of choosing someone outside the judiciary — every current justice is a former federal appeals court judge — but passed over at least two serious candidates who had never been judges.

Sotomayor has spoken openly about her pride in her ethnic background and has said that personal experiences "affect the facts that judges choose to see."
"I simply do not know exactly what the difference will be in my judging," she said in a speech in 2002. "But I accept there will be some based on my gender and my Latina heritage."

From the moment Souter announced his resignation, it was widely assumed Obama would select a woman to replace him, and perhaps a Hispanic as well.
Others known to have been considered included federal appeals judge Diane Wood, who was a colleague of the president's at the University of Chicago Law School, as well as two members of his administration, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Solicitor General-nominee Elena Kagan.

Obama came to office at a time when several potential vacancies loomed on the high court. Justice John Paul Stevens at is 89, and Ginsburg recently underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer.

Now that the hot weather has arrived, is anybody changing up their beauty/hair routines?

I have been practicing updos and will try to let my hair air dry sometimes and put my hair in a fancy updo. I'm going to start with the gradual self-tanner today. I guess this means I have to shave my legs more often, lol.

I like to use a gel bronzer on my face in the summer, too, for an extra glow.

Oh yes, I def. use bronzer!! I used to love Bonne Bell's gel bronzer...it was a great color, the only downfall was it didn't last very long. I'm really liking Artisry's bronzing powder but it's pretty concentrated so I have to be careful not to overdo it! The container should last me about 6 years, LOL!

BJ introduced me to Jergens natural glow for face and I love it (come to think of it, I love BJ too...she always gives me good advice)! I'm a self tanner addict!!! I'm thinking about trying that Costa Rica one that Michelle sells...everyone seems to like it! BJ- you should try it first and let me let me know, LOL!

Ah, yes... summer time skin care! Here in NY/NJ, it seems we went right from winter to summer.

When the weather warms, I pretty much stop cream cleansers in favor of ones that foam/lather. Last year, I did more clay masques, this year it will be dead sea masques (I'm an extra oily gal in the hot weather). I also put a leave in with sunscreen in my hair before bedtime and then again in the morning: in the cooler months, I just use hair sunscreen in the morning. I also do less AHA peels, since my skin kind of "regenerates" more (for lack of a better word) in the warm weather AND since AHA make one more sensitive to the sun. This is the first summer that I have a sunscreen (Burn out) that doesn't irritate me, so I am fairly excited to see how well it will perform!!!

Again, this is my first summer with my new skin (aka no more acne scars!!!!) so no face makeup for me. I haven't worn any foundation or powder in months. In the summer, though, I use more oil blotting papers. I think I may even wean blush out of my makeup routine... we'll see.

I also bought a 1940s style bathing suit this past weekend. I got it at Target - it is so cute. The front and back are ruched - the ruching kind of starts at the outer part and meets in the middle. It looks like mini-dress that Paris Hilton would wear - the ruching just covers my butt. Now I just have to get my legs in shape - that is the other thing I am doing for summer -trying to do lots of squats to get my upper thighs in better shape.

I forgot to add to the first post, I also switch from body creme/butter to lotion...AND I use salt foot scrub every day instead of every couple of days. I guess there ARE a lot of "little" tweaks to the rituals. I DO enjoy them so much! It's fun being a girlie girl!!!!!

Sadie's Saturday Night Lonely

“It’s Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody. I’ve got some money cuz I just got paid. Oh, how I wish I had someone to talk to. I’m in an awful way.” I am living Cat Stevens’ song. Last night I was living Jimmy Buffett’s “Let’s get drunk and screw,” and tonight I am all alone.

The slinky black dress sitting on my bed is doing me no good tonight because there is nowhere to go and no one to go there with. I cannot watch another Lifetime Movie of doom and gloom of cheating husbands plotting to kill their wives. And I am sure I should not open another bottle of wine after drinking the first one alone.

Oh, it’s one of the lonely nights I dread. Lindy, my best friend is living her life tonight with her husband of forever. He is so totally perfect and so is she. They have the perfect house, and the perfect kids. I am very lucky also because most of the time she is the perfect best friend, except for tonight when I a sitting here all alone and hating it.

So I will indulge myself in the memory of last night when I boldly set out where no single woman should go, and yet I did. I was on the hunt. I was looking for love, well, not actually love. I’ve sworn off love. I’ve had enough “love” to last me a lifetime. I did however, want sex. A woman has needs, and I am telling you, last night I had needs. My testosterone level was out of control, and I wanted, no I needed to get them back in control. So, I did it the best way I could figure at this point in my life.

I don’t have a man. I don’t want a man, well not all the time. I have decided that I am going to enjoy men for the simple pleasure of them, and on my terms. If I am going to be lonely, lied to, and yelled at, it will be on my terms. More accurately, I will not be lonely. I will not be lied to. I will not be yelled at. I will be enjoyed. So there.

And let me tell you, last night I was enjoyed. Oh yeah. For a few glorious hours, I was not alone. I was in a room full of strangers all playing for my attention. It was sweet as cotton candy! The drinks were flowing as steady as a river on a windy day. Just before closing time, I lassoed the bull with dark hair and dark eyes, not young enough to be my son, and not old enough to match my years. Not only did I lasso him, I led him right to my lair. Oh, I am savoring the memory of what followed.

Then morning came, and we went for another ride. Morning was glorious. The sun shone brightly through my bedroom windows. Ok, so it was noon. Still the sun shone brightly and so did I. Breakfast was delightful. Well, actually it was lunch, and it was great. Then we parted ways. I hiked one of my favorite trails with Lindy. Then headed home to my loneliness. Had I been smart, I would have headed to Macy’s for some therapy. But I went home instead.

After several failed attempts to connect with friends who I had hoped had time on their hands for me, I opened a bottle of wine and let it breathe while I ran a bath. I filled it with lavender and peppermint salts, relaxing and energizing at the same time - what was I thinking? I lit twenty candles, filled a glass of wine, and sunk into the tub. Nirvana. Until I got out. I poured a second glass of wine and pulled out my slinky black dress and put it on. I admired how snugly it fit and tried on four different pair of shoes to see which ones fit my mood for tonight. I poured a third glass of wine, hoping that someone would call. I sent eight requests on match.com. Surely someone will get back to me.

As I gulp the fourth glass of wine, I removed the slinky black dress and put it on my bed - a cruel reminder of Cat Stevens’ lament of” Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody.”

Granted, the words "all men are born equally" were penned June 2, 1784, and since then changes were made to the New Hampshire Constitution to prohibit discrimination, and the section on the Legislature describes the role of its "members."

But maybe, lawmakers say, it's time to update some of the wording nonetheless. After all, it's women running the show now in Concord, marking the first time in United States history women make up the majority of a legislative body, in this case the 24-member Senate.

The curtain between two hospital beds does not stop noise from the television set, offer privacy during sensitive conversations with doctors or stop germs from spreading. Yet in most of America’s aging hospitals it is the only thing that separates strangers thrust together as roommates simply because both are ill.
HUSHED Rooms at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in Michigan do not share walls or ceilings, cutting noise.

But in many new hospitals and pavilions, these semiprivate rooms have vanished. Single-patient rooms are now viewed as an important element of high-quality health care.

The benefits of the single room emerged through evidence-based hospital design, a new field that guides health care construction. More than 1,500 studies have examined ways that design can reduce medical errors, infections and falls — and relieve patient stress.

American hospitals started 53 million square feet of new construction and major additions in 2008, according to a report by McGraw-Hill Construction, a company that tracks industry trends. Promoters of evidence-based design say that a building exerts a powerful force on the delivery of health care, and that the best new health centers are light-filled, quiet and easy to navigate.

“Some hospitals are taking evidence-based design seriously,” said Roger Ulrich, director of the Center for Health Systems and Design at Texas A&M. “Other institutions use pretty traditional design that pays lip service to the evidence. There may be high style, but the hospital is still noisy. Or the windows are too small to let much light in. There are missed opportunities.”

Besides privacy, research shows that single rooms reduce infections and patient stress, and improve sleep. In 2006, the American Institute of Architects called for single rooms in all new hospital construction............

Umademyday.com and BeanTowne Coffee House of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Hampstead New Hampshire today announced a unique partnership with the intent of raising spirits and spreading goodwill in a time when both are severely lacking.

Umademyday.com, launched in October of 2008, is a website designed to motivate people to do something nice for one another without the expectation of something in return. Through the site, over 600 random acts of kindness have been performed. Unique to Umademyday.com is the ability of recipients of these acts to post thank you notes to the strangers that made a difference in their day.

"It's amazing how even the smallest acts of kindness can make such a significant impact on both the person who did the good deed as well as the one receiving it. The happiness you experience when doing random acts of kindness is like no other feeling, and it can truly make someone's day," states Josee Archer, creator of UMadeMyDay.com, "and it doesn´t have to be much; the most common random act of kindness is purchasing a cup of coffee for the person in line behind you at the coffee shop."

BeanTowne Coffee House of Cambridge and Hampstead are rooted in the concept of brightening people´s days and lives. WASHINGTON – It's not all doom and gloom in the U.S. economy. Some products are bucking the recession and flying off store shelves.

Sales of chocolate and running shoes are up. Wine drinkers haven't stopped sipping; they just seem to be choosing cheaper vintages.

Gold coins are selling like hot cakes. So are gardening seeds. Tanning products are piling up in shopping carts; maybe more people are finding color in a bottle than from sun-worshipping on a faraway beach.

Strong sales of Spam, Dinty Moore stew and chili helped Hormel Foods Corp. post a 6 percent increase in first quarter sales in its grocery products unit.

Consumers have trimmed household budgets and postponed buying cars, major appliances and other big-ticket items. Yet they still are willing to shell out for small indulgences and goods that make life more comfortable at home, where they are spending more time.

Recession shoppers also are drawn to items that make them feel safe, both personally and financially.

"The focus on the family hearth is something that has happened in nearly every recession. It's, `How can I have more fun at home?'" said Paco Underhill, whose company, Envirosell, monitors the behavior of shoppers and sellers across the U.S. and in other countries.

"People are much more focused on their homes and their immediate happiness and they're buying things that they can use themselves — seeds, fishing equipment. Lipstick and chocolate are small rewards that make you feel better."
Profits in the first three months of 2009 at Hershey Co., the nation's second-largest candy maker, surged 20 percent and beat Wall Street's expectations. Kraft Foods Inc. reported double-digit growth in macaroni and cheese dinners — the consummate comfort food.

Recessions, it seems, are good for love, too. Over the final three months of 2008, condom sales rose 5 percent and Match.com reported its strongest performance in seven years.

But economic woes are as rough on the tummy as they are on the wallet. Chicago-based market researcher Information Resources Inc. reports that sales of laxative liquids and powders rose 11.5 percent for the 52 weeks ending April 19. Sales of stomach remedy tablets, including Pepto-Bismol and Phillips brands, climbed 8 percent.
As expected during any economic slump, recession shoppers looking for deals have boosted sales at discount chains such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Dollar Tree Inc. sneaked into this year's Fortune 500 for the first time, at No. 499.

There's a general tendency to trade down, according to Leo J. Shapiro & Associates, a consulting firm in Chicago. That means eating dinner at the kitchen table instead of restaurants, buying used cars and shopping at do-it-yourself auto parts stores. It means spending less on clothes. Sales at luxury retailer Saks Inc. fell 32 percent last month. Sales at Goodwill Industries International stores in the U.S. and Canada jumped by 7 percent in March.

"If you're used to eating out, maybe you're now buying a high-end steak at the supermarket," said Bill Patterson, a senior analyst in Chicago with Mintel International, which supplies consumer, product and media intelligence. "If you eat at home mostly, maybe you are going down from the branded product to a private label."

People are not drinking as much beer or wine at bars and restaurants, but they haven't stopped drinking. The Wine Institute says that despite the recession, U.S. sales of California wines totaled about 467 million gallons last year — 2 percent more than the year before. But people are looking more closely at cheaper selections: The overall retail value of California wine sales fell slightly from 2007, the institute said.

Those on the go are not shying away from footing the bill for sturdy running shoes. Sales increased 2 percent in 2008, said Tom Doyle at the National Sporting Goods Association in Mount Prospect, Ill.

"Runners aren't going to hurt themselves to save a few bucks," he said. Likewise, sales of bicycle helmets are up as parents continue to spend money to protect youngsters, he said.

The financial meltdown produced more interest in home safes. Coin dealers are awash in customers as investors big and small see the safety of gold.
Sunshine Minting Inc. in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, which supplies gold blanks to the U.S. Mint, doubled its work force in 2008.

"It just came on like gangbusters," said president Tom Power, who struggled to hire, train and get new equipment to handle demand that doubled, then tripled. "You can't just flip a switch and jump up production overnight."

Guns are selling well, too. Total firearms sales rose 27.5 percent at Smith & Wesson for the three months ending Jan. 31. It's not a sudden interest in hunting behind the increase; hunting firearm sales at the company declined during the quarter by 46 percent.

Gun sales are being driven by concern that the Obama administration will tighten gun laws. But people also are feeling a level of fear and heightened interest in self-reliance as they weather the recession.

"They are looking down the road going `What could happen here?'" Underhill said. "I think a lot of Americans are truly scared. One of the things that tickles is our pioneer ethos, which is, `I feel better with a year's supply of toilet paper' and `Maybe I should start canning and pickling.'"

Many people already are.
The number of home vegetable gardens is predicted to jump more than 40 percent this year, compared with two years ago, according to the National Gardening Association. Sales of vegetable seeds such as green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and lettuce climbed 30 percent as of March at W. Atlee Burpee, a large seed company in Warminster, Pa. It organized a basic training course called "root camp" for hundreds of would-be gardeners this month outside Philadelphia.

Still, when the economy grinds to a halt, people clench their teeth. That could mean spending money at the dentist.

There's no statistical evidence, but dentists such as Dr. Matthew Messina in Cleveland, Ohio., are seeing more people with tooth-grinding injuries.

"The body responds the same way to a real threat, `There's a burglar in the house,' as it does to a perceived stress like `I'm worried I'm going to lose the house,'" Messina said.

Valerie Sullivan among 100 Unsung Heroines

Valerie Sullivan has been caught working nights and weekends at Town Hall. She has been spotted in schools, senior housing, health centers and social halls at all times of day and night.
She has clearly exceeded the 35 hours a week she was hired to work as Weymouth’s Community Health Program Coordinator.
She may have thought no one would notice. She was wrong.
Today Sullivan is being honored at the State House as one of 100 Unsung Heroines recognized by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women for their outstanding contributions to their communities and organizations.
“Our Unsung Heroines are women who don't make the news, but make the difference,” said Kira Dunn, MCSW Executive Director. “They are women who use their time and talent to show us the meaning of the saying ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’”
Sullivan was nominated for the honor by Weymouth Councilor-at-Large Michael Molisse.
“She just does so much for the town of Weymouth that she isn’t noticed for,” he said. “If you go to Town Hall at eight at night, she’s still in her office researching grants, trying to promote a healthy Weymouth.”
“She’s out at different events trying to reach out to people. She puts so much of her own time in. She has been a huge asset to the health department.”
Sullivan has worked to promote wellness for all citizens, Molisse said, with programs on such issues as substance abuse, stroke awareness and weight loss, and free blood pressure and cholesterol checks.
“These days we’re engaged with so many health issues, we’re very fortunate to have Valerie and her programs in the town of Weymouth.”

‘A great team’
Sullivan said she was “shocked” to learn of her selection as an Unsung Heroine.
“I’m really am kind of a low-key person. I try just to do my work,” she said. “Sometimes it’s the nature of trying to get grant funding that you have to put in extra hours, but when you do receive it, it’s a wonderful thing.”
“Especially in this economic climate, you have to go for that type of funding, so you can keep your initiatives moving forward.”
Sullivan graduated from the UMass/Boston College of Public and Community Services with a degree in Human Services.
She took the position of community health programs Coordinator four years ago to help address the findings of Weymouth’s 2003 Health Needs Assessment.
A key part of Sullivan’s job is grant money to fund health programs, but she also helps to implement the programs and coordinate with town departments and community groups.
“I am passionate about what we’re trying to do, but I’m only one,” she said. “I do have a great team.”
That team, which completed nine months of training through the Massachusetts Forum for Creating Healthier Communities, includes members of the public health, parks and recreation, elder services and school departments, as well as mental health, hospital and community groups.
“We learned a lot of wonderful things to bring back to the town. We became a cohesive team,” she said. “Now we’re trying to keep the momentum going.”
On Thursday, Sullivan is coordinating the town’s first “Healthy Wey” Forum for professionals and community representatives involved in all aspects of health care, wellness and public safety.
“We’ll talk a little bit about what we’re trying to do to create a healthier Weymouth,” she said. “We’ll touch on some of the challenges and try to build on our assets to create opportunities for people to work together.”

Health tips
A firm believer in practicing what she preaches, Sullivan said she tries to eat healthier foods, take stairs instead of elevators and walk from the far end of parking lots.
“I do enjoy yoga, and it helps clear the mind,” she said.
And lest anyone label her a workaholic, Sullivan said she rarely makes work-related calls or goes online when she’s home. She enjoys leisure reading, watching “silly sitcoms” and spending time with her husband Gary and their three adult children.
“We’re all just constantly on the phone or the Blackberry or e-mail,” she said. “How much can you fit in one day? Are we taking enough time for ourselves to regroup and have a little fun?”
She has “the travel bug” and has enjoyed recent trips to Martha’s Vineyard, to New York City to visit her daughter, and to Europe for a cruise down the Rhine River.
“I think one of the most important things is you need to have good health. It affects all aspects of your life,” said Sullivan. “You have to take time for yourself.”
“Weymouth is a wonderful community with a lot of resources in town. The mayor is doing a wonderful job. A lot of the leadership in the town is wonderful.”
“Economically, it’s tough out there, but if we continue to work together, good things can happen.”

MUMBAI (Reuters) - City authorities in Mumbai demolished the shanty home of a "Slumdog Millionaire" child star on Thursday, forcing his family into the streets months after the Oscar-winning film shot him to global fame.

Azharuddin Ismail, 9, played the character of Salim as a child in the film, a rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show.

Ismail's tarpaulin-covered home in a teeming slum was one of several shanties, illegally built along a drain, that were demolished by local authorities in Mumbai, India's financial capital and entertainment hub.

"When they came I was sleeping, they shook me awake and one policeman even threatened me," Ismail, surrounded by half-broken suitcases filled with clothes and utensils, told Reuters.

"What can I do if they have demolished my house? I will sleep out in the open."

A poster of "Slumdog Millionaire," signed by director Danny Boyle, fluttered from the only wall of Ismail's shanty still standing. Open sewers run nearby and it had no running water.

Authorities said the shanties had been demolished earlier but had sprung up again on the same spot.

"The shanties are all touching a drain that has to be cleaned before the advent of the monsoons," said U.D. Mistry, the local official in charge of the demolition drive.

Earlier this year, there was an outcry after pictures emerged of "Slumdog Millionaire's" child stars living in squalor despite the movie's box-office success and eight Academy Awards.

The film also sparked controversy for its name, deemed by some to be offensive to slum dwellers, and its treatment of the cast. Its depiction of the lives of poor Indians was dubbed "poverty porn" by sections of the media.

In February, the housing authority of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said they would give Ismail and fellow child star Rubina Ali new houses. But Ismail's mother, Shameem, said the family is now at the mercy of the rains.

"We also heard that the government had promised us houses, but what happened? We are still homeless," she said. "My son has brought glory to the country, shouldn't he get some credit?"

A Los Angeles-based fashion designer, Lhuillier has made wedding gowns for Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Jewel.

A wedding is a celebration, and your clothes should reflect that. The pictures of that day are going to be in the bride’s and groom’s lives forever, and beautifully dressed guests really help set the mood.

Dress Up. Being underdressed is the worst feeling, so I’d rather overdo it. Even if an invitation says “casual attired,” the furthest you should take that is a floaty cocktail dress or simple sheath. For a black-tie wedding, a long, formal dress is always appropriate, but if you’d rather go short, choose something knee-length in an opulent fabric. Silk charmeuse has a glamourous, ‘30s vibe and looks effortless but still fancy.

Take a hint. The location of the event is a big clue about what to wear. If the wedding is on a beach in Mexico, it’s pretty obvious that you should stay away from heavy beading. I love chiffon for a resort wedding. It’s romantic, dreamy, and elegant. If the party is in a more traditional setting, like a ballroom or a country club, chances are the dress code will be more conservative.

Embrace color. All black on a wedding guest is too severe. Jewel tones like a peacock blue and emerald green and omber patterns are sophisticated and vibrant. Stay away from white, not just at the reception but at any wedding event, from the rehearsal dinner to the day-after brunch. That’s the bride’s territory.

Stay focused. Choose one item to build your outfit around, whether it’s your shoes or an amazing piece of jewelry. You want to avoid looking as if you piled on every accessory you own. If you have a complicated dress with a lot of ruching or a bold print, keep the jewelry minimal. And those dyed-to-match shoes are a definite no-no—not everything needs to coordinate exactly.

Don’t go flat. Heels are tricky at an outdoor wedding, but flats don’t feel right with a formal dress. Wedges are great for lawn receptions. If a wedding is on sand, I wear embellished sandals, though I often take them off and go barefoot.

Sadie is greeted by this email when she logs into her email account. The receipt clearly shows May 10th and it IS from Barnes & Noble. HOW CAN THAT BE?

“I was there!” she shouted to her laptop. “This is crazy!”

So of course, Sadie dialed Lindy’s number. “LIndy, you are not going to believe this. I am looking at a copy of a receipt that Bill emailed to me. He purchased a book at B&N today. The time confirms he was there. It makes no sense.”

“Hmmmm, that’s weird. Sadie, are you sure you knew what he looked like? You haven’t the best luck with meeting men who match their profile pictures?”

“Not again. If that’s the case, I really don’t want to meet him. He asked me for a third chance. None of this makes sense.”

“Sadie, I just thought of something. Look at the address on the receipt.”

“The address? Oh my goodness! LIndy this is so funny! He WAS at B&N, but in South Nashua! I was in Manchester. Now whose fault is that?”

“Sadie, knowing you the way I do, my bets are on you confusing the meeting place.”

“Lindy, that is so unfair. You know, come to think of it. We did not specify one. I guess I just assumed we’d meet there since he lives in Manchester.”

“Interesting, Sadie. I am guessing that because you live in Nashua, that he went there. This guy sounds pretty nice, actually.”

“He wants to meet for breakfast. Where should we go?”

“Why don’t you let him decide and make sure you get the address AND name of the place you are meeting. Oh, and Sadie, make sure you get the right day.”
