Tracy Caruso of WZID-Inspirational Women in Media-Applaud Women-Spring 2010

Tracy Caruso of WZID by Emily Pietro

After years of different careers, Tracy Caruso, of Manchester, NH, is happy to once again be at WZID.

Talking about her decision to go into radio, Tracy shares, “I decided that I wanted to work in radio when I was in high school. I had one teacher, Mr.. Hughard, who taught a speech class that I took in my junior and senior years. This really made me realize that I wanted to do something with speaking, although not necessarily in front of a crowd of people. People are shocked to hear that I’m actually nervous to speak in front of people, but it’s different to be in a little room with a microphone in front of you. There aren’t millions of eyes staring at you!”

Tracy first became involved in radio when she was still at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting through their placement program. “I got really lucky and got my first job at a morning show for a tiny AM station in Fitchburg, and when I say tiny, I mean it – it was in a house. We had a fireplace in the studio and everything, it was really cozy.” Since her debut at this station, Tracy has worked for many others, including WORC AM in Worcester, WMBU in Nashua, WKNE in Keene, which was her first FM station, and she has worked twice at WZID.

Osteoporosis-What Women Need to Know-Applaud Women-Spring 2010

Make No Bones About It: What Women Need To Know About – Osteoporosis by by Jill Hiers, Pharm.D, BCPS of Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH

When most women approach menopause, they tend to focus their attention on three symptoms: hot-flashes, mood swings and weight gain. These symptoms can be problematic and certainly may affect quality of life but there is something else to consider that may not cause any symptoms at all and that is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by weak and brittle bones that are more likely to fracture, it is often called a silent disease affecting men and women of any age, but most commonly affects post-menopausal women. Often, there are often no symptoms until a bone breaks.

Besides being a post-menopausal female, there are other risk factors for developing osteoporosis, or osteopenia, which occurs when bones are weaker than normal, but not to the point of osteoporosis. These risk factors include increased age, ethnicity (Caucasian, Asian), low weight, previous fracture(s) before the age of 45, current cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use and rheumatoid arthritis. Inactivity, low calcium and vitamin D intake, previous cigarette smoking, recurrent falls and certain medications (heparin, corticosteroids like prednisone, certain seizure medications and excessive thyroid supplementation) can also lead to osteoporosis. Paula Ebben, WBZ TV-Inspirational Women in Media, Applaud Women Spring 2010

Paula Ebben, WBZ TV by Cheri Valentine

Paula Ebben, an anchor for Boston’s WBZ-TV’s morning news show, recalls her mother often saying to her when she was young, “You remind me of my own mother. You have a nose for news.”

Growing up in a family where her grandparents were reporters, there was constant talk of news and politics at the family dinner table so it was no surprise when Paula chose a career in news. As the youngest of ten brothers and sisters, she would often assert herself in the conversations about news stories. Paula attributes her success to “luck and timing” and is grateful for the time she was afforded to start a family before embarking on her childhood passion to be involved in the news world. And to read the rest of the article go to the Spring issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Maria Stephanos, FOX TV - Inspirational Women in Media-Applaud Women Spring 2010

Maria Stephanos, Fox TV by Cheri Valentine

Maria Stephanos has always been interested in communicating. As a baby, Maria would line up an audience of stuffed animals in her crib and talk to them, so it’s no surprise that she has become a successful news anchor for three nightly newscasts on FOX25 News.

Recalling the vivid memory of her parents transfixed by the television coverage of Elvis Presley’s death, she relates that it was at that moment that she recognized the power of the media as it stopped her parents in their tracks. She thought, ”Wow! That is what I want to do. That is an incredible thing. And to read the rest of the article go to the Spring issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Whether it’s reporting on health care reform or Sandra Bullock’s heartache, Frances Rivera “absolutely feels passion, fervor, and excitement” for delivering the news. She loves that she brings information to help people in their daily lives, whether it’s reporting on how to avoid roads under construction or on a defective product so that people won’t get hurt. “Even in the midst of tragedy, I report pieces of information so that people can benefit and learn.
Frances, currently a television news anchor for four nightly newscasts at 7NEWS in Boston, developed an interest in the media while studying journalism at the University of the Philippines. Downsize Your Home as Part of Your Retirement Plan-Applaud Women Spring Issue 2010

Downsizing Can Be a Smart Move by Robin Young

As people move into their 50s and 60s, priorities change. The hours spent on yard work and house work is less appealing and as kids move on there’s all that unneeded space.

Downsizing can offer many financial benefits including saving potentially tens of thousands of dollars with a lower (or no mortgage), and lower taxes, insurance and utilities. There are emotional benefits too, as studies show that you can improve your quality of life by freeing up time to do the things you want to do!

Start by developing a financial plan that outlines what is important to you. What type of lifestyle do you want to live today and what kind of home could you see yourself living comfortably in at age 70 or 80? You don’t have to move to predictable retirement destinations. Telecommuting allows many people to continue their working lives and education from anywhere. The magic combination might involve cheaper real estate, desired weather and activities, travel options, and access to good doctors and quality health care facilities. This combination of factors might happen in a surprisingly large number of places. To get you thinking, start with resources like the U.S. News & World Report’s online “Best Places to Retire” tool. Be Beautiful & Healthy with Tea-Applaud Women Spring Issue 2010

Tea is as good on you as it is in you! By Danielle Beaudette

We all enjoy drinking whole leaf teas for their natural health benefits and delicious taste. But tea isn’t just for enjoying as a beverage. Many fine chefs around the world are cooking with tea to promote healthy eating, and quality skin care companies are promoting tea as one of the key ingredients in their skin care products. Tea is loaded with a variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. So it’s only natural that we would find companies promoting the use of tea extract or tea seed oil with other healthy and natural ingredients to beautify the skin.

Free radicals are all around us in the air and can also come from UV rays. If absorbed into our bodies and left alone, these free radicals can replicate and may lead to cancer causing cells and signs of aging. EGCG, the strongest antioxidant in tea, has shown to strengthen the skin cells, act as an antibacterial agent to aid in clearing acne, reduce inflammation and puffiness, and aid in fighting the free radical cells in our bodies without harming healthy tissue. Getting ready for Swimsuit Season with “Calorie Confusion”-Applaud Women Spring 2010 issue

Getting ready for Swimsuit Season with “Calorie Confusion” by Dr. Jennifer Warren.

Okay, so the warm weather has started and many of us are now thinking of how we’re going to look in last year’s swimsuits. So Applaud turned to our resident weight loss expert to see what advice she can offer to help.

Let’s talk about the importance of calories. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine confirms that calories are key to weight loss. “But I don’t eat many calories,” you might think to yourself.

But calories are sneaky little devils. They can crop up in the most unexpected places. And trying to balance them can be a bit confusing.

Here are a few common mistakes, and how you can avoid them: To get these tips and read the full article go to the Spring issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Boundaries in Dating-Applaud Women On-line Magazine 2010 Spring Issue

Boundaries in Dating by Cheri Valentine
Setting personal boundaries is important in relationships. It allows you to be centered, indicates to others how to treat you, and helps you find the right person.

If we do not set personal boundaries, we can become resentful, stressed, and quickly disappointed in attempts at dating. We jeopardize our chances at forming new, healthy relationships.

To set personal boundaries you must first be clear on your values and your needs. Know what you are willing to do and not do. Know how to say “no” when something is not right for you, and “yes” when it is. You must understand your needs so that you can be mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. Do you allow yourself time for your own care and needs? If you are not doing this now, chances are you will not do this in dating or in a relationship, and it will be difficult for another person to tap into your healthy personal energy that is the foundation for a good relationship. Fashion Trends from the Spring Issue of Applaud Women

Susan Kanoff

Spring Fashion Trends
    by Susan Kanoff
It’s been a long winter and pretty soon it will be time to put away the heavy wool sweaters and start thinking spring clothes. If you’re worried that your spring wardrobe isn’t up to par, take a peek at what’s “in” this season & have fun incorporating some updated pieces into your collection.

    Neutrals:
Soft neutral colors are everywhere this season – shades of pale gray, beige, peach, and taupe are this spring’s staple colors. Unfortunately, not everyone can wear these colors since they tend to wash some women out. If you have this issue, mix soft neutrals with bright colors such as shades of turquoise, coral, and blue. Some of my favorite color combinations are light peach with coral, light gray with turquoise, and layered shades of sand, beige and khaki. I also love neutrals with metallics!

Springtime Savings: Looking Fabulous on a Budget
By Alana Finnie
It’s easy to go overboard spending-wise when springtime rolls around. All of our gray and black winter frocks seem so boring in contrast to the gorgeous colors that are on full display in every store. But you don’t have to break the bank to look fantastic this season. With my shopping budget of basically $0 (fine, maybe a tiny bit more than that), it’s tough to find ways to update my style. Sticking to accessories is the easiest way for me. You can update what you already have (ie: a little black dress, anything denim, a plain white t-shirt, etc.) with a few great accessories and make a huge difference in the way you look. Here are a few springtime delights that won’t leave you penniless.

Scarves

Buying a few scarves is a great way to step-up your wardrobe in the cheapest way possible. Not only does it warm you up during this transitional period, it also can turn your normal, everyday “blah” look into a totally different outfit. There are countless options out there. I like to go to flea markets and try to find deals, but if you’re wary of that, there are some great finds all over the place! This scarf from Old Navy is on sale for about $11. You can find this and many others at oldnavy.com.
