Tracy Caruso of WZID-Inspirational Women in Media-Applaud Women-Spring 2010

Tracy Caruso of WZID by Emily Pietro

After years of different careers, Tracy Caruso, of Manchester, NH, is happy to once again be at WZID.

Talking about her decision to go into radio, Tracy shares, “I decided that I wanted to work in radio when I was in high school. I had one teacher, Mr.. Hughard, who taught a speech class that I took in my junior and senior years. This really made me realize that I wanted to do something with speaking, although not necessarily in front of a crowd of people. People are shocked to hear that I’m actually nervous to speak in front of people, but it’s different to be in a little room with a microphone in front of you. There aren’t millions of eyes staring at you!”

Tracy first became involved in radio when she was still at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting through their placement program. “I got really lucky and got my first job at a morning show for a tiny AM station in Fitchburg, and when I say tiny, I mean it – it was in a house. We had a fireplace in the studio and everything, it was really cozy.” Since her debut at this station, Tracy has worked for many others, including WORC AM in Worcester, WMBU in Nashua, WKNE in Keene, which was her first FM station, and she has worked twice at WZID.

Osteoporosis-What Women Need to Know-Applaud Women-Spring 2010

Make No Bones About It: What Women Need To Know About – Osteoporosis by by Jill Hiers, Pharm.D, BCPS of Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH

When most women approach menopause, they tend to focus their attention on three symptoms: hot-flashes, mood swings and weight gain. These symptoms can be problematic and certainly may affect quality of life but there is something else to consider that may not cause any symptoms at all and that is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by weak and brittle bones that are more likely to fracture, it is often called a silent disease affecting men and women of any age, but most commonly affects post-menopausal women. Often, there are often no symptoms until a bone breaks.

Besides being a post-menopausal female, there are other risk factors for developing osteoporosis, or osteopenia, which occurs when bones are weaker than normal, but not to the point of osteoporosis. These risk factors include increased age, ethnicity (Caucasian, Asian), low weight, previous fracture(s) before the age of 45, current cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use and rheumatoid arthritis. Inactivity, low calcium and vitamin D intake, previous cigarette smoking, recurrent falls and certain medications (heparin, corticosteroids like prednisone, certain seizure medications and excessive thyroid supplementation) can also lead to osteoporosis. Paula Ebben, WBZ TV-Inspirational Women in Media, Applaud Women Spring 2010

Paula Ebben, WBZ TV by Cheri Valentine

Paula Ebben, an anchor for Boston’s WBZ-TV’s morning news show, recalls her mother often saying to her when she was young, “You remind me of my own mother. You have a nose for news.”

Growing up in a family where her grandparents were reporters, there was constant talk of news and politics at the family dinner table so it was no surprise when Paula chose a career in news. As the youngest of ten brothers and sisters, she would often assert herself in the conversations about news stories. Paula attributes her success to “luck and timing” and is grateful for the time she was afforded to start a family before embarking on her childhood passion to be involved in the news world. And to read the rest of the article go to the Spring issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Maria Stephanos, FOX TV - Inspirational Women in Media-Applaud Women Spring 2010

Maria Stephanos, Fox TV by Cheri Valentine

Maria Stephanos has always been interested in communicating. As a baby, Maria would line up an audience of stuffed animals in her crib and talk to them, so it’s no surprise that she has become a successful news anchor for three nightly newscasts on FOX25 News.

Recalling the vivid memory of her parents transfixed by the television coverage of Elvis Presley’s death, she relates that it was at that moment that she recognized the power of the media as it stopped her parents in their tracks. She thought, ”Wow! That is what I want to do. That is an incredible thing. And to read the rest of the article go to the Spring issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Frances Rivera, WHDH - Channel 7-Inspirational Women in Media-Applaud Women Spring 2010

Frances Rivera, WHDH - Channel 7 by Cheri Valentine.

Whether it’s reporting on health care reform or Sandra Bullock’s heartache, Frances Rivera “absolutely feels passion, fervor, and excitement” for delivering the news. She loves that she brings information to help people in their daily lives, whether it’s reporting on how to avoid roads under construction or on a defective product so that people won’t get hurt. “Even in the midst of tragedy, I report pieces of information so that people can benefit and learn.
Frances, currently a television news anchor for four nightly newscasts at 7NEWS in Boston, developed an interest in the media while studying journalism at the University of the Philippines. Although she grew up in Texas, her mother encouraged her to attend school in the Philippines to gain exposure to her Filipino heritage. This experience also contributed to her adventurous spirit. Downsize Your Home as Part of Your Retirement Plan-Applaud Women Spring Issue 2010

Downsizing Can Be a Smart Move by Robin Young

As people move into their 50s and 60s, priorities change. The hours spent on yard work and house work is less appealing and as kids move on there’s all that unneeded space.

Downsizing can offer many financial benefits including saving potentially tens of thousands of dollars with a lower (or no mortgage), and lower taxes, insurance and utilities. There are emotional benefits too, as studies show that you can improve your quality of life by freeing up time to do the things you want to do!

Start by developing a financial plan that outlines what is important to you. What type of lifestyle do you want to live today and what kind of home could you see yourself living comfortably in at age 70 or 80? You don’t have to move to predictable retirement destinations. Telecommuting allows many people to continue their working lives and education from anywhere. The magic combination might involve cheaper real estate, desired weather and activities, travel options, and access to good doctors and quality health care facilities. This combination of factors might happen in a surprisingly large number of places. To get you thinking, start with resources like the U.S. News & World Report’s online “Best Places to Retire” tool. Be Beautiful & Healthy with Tea-Applaud Women Spring Issue 2010

Tea is as good on you as it is in you! By Danielle Beaudette

We all enjoy drinking whole leaf teas for their natural health benefits and delicious taste. But tea isn’t just for enjoying as a beverage. Many fine chefs around the world are cooking with tea to promote healthy eating, and quality skin care companies are promoting tea as one of the key ingredients in their skin care products. Tea is loaded with a variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. So it’s only natural that we would find companies promoting the use of tea extract or tea seed oil with other healthy and natural ingredients to beautify the skin.

Free radicals are all around us in the air and can also come from UV rays. If absorbed into our bodies and left alone, these free radicals can replicate and may lead to cancer causing cells and signs of aging. EGCG, the strongest antioxidant in tea, has shown to strengthen the skin cells, act as an antibacterial agent to aid in clearing acne, reduce inflammation and puffiness, and aid in fighting the free radical cells in our bodies without harming healthy tissue. Getting ready for Swimsuit Season with “Calorie Confusion”-Applaud Women Spring 2010 issue

Getting ready for Swimsuit Season with “Calorie Confusion” by Dr. Jennifer Warren.

Okay, so the warm weather has started and many of us are now thinking of how we’re going to look in last year’s swimsuits. So Applaud turned to our resident weight loss expert to see what advice she can offer to help.

Let’s talk about the importance of calories. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine confirms that calories are key to weight loss. “But I don’t eat many calories,” you might think to yourself.

But calories are sneaky little devils. They can crop up in the most unexpected places. And trying to balance them can be a bit confusing.

Here are a few common mistakes, and how you can avoid them: To get these tips and read the full article go to the Spring issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Boundaries in Dating-Applaud Women On-line Magazine 2010 Spring Issue

Boundaries in Dating by Cheri Valentine
Setting personal boundaries is important in relationships. It allows you to be centered, indicates to others how to treat you, and helps you find the right person.

If we do not set personal boundaries, we can become resentful, stressed, and quickly disappointed in attempts at dating. We jeopardize our chances at forming new, healthy relationships.

To set personal boundaries you must first be clear on your values and your needs. Know what you are willing to do and not do. Know how to say “no” when something is not right for you, and “yes” when it is. You must understand your needs so that you can be mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. Do you allow yourself time for your own care and needs? If you are not doing this now, chances are you will not do this in dating or in a relationship, and it will be difficult for another person to tap into your healthy personal energy that is the foundation for a good relationship. Fashion Trends from the Spring Issue of Applaud Women

Susan Kanoff

Spring Fashion Trends
    by Susan Kanoff
It’s been a long winter and pretty soon it will be time to put away the heavy wool sweaters and start thinking spring clothes. If you’re worried that your spring wardrobe isn’t up to par, take a peek at what’s “in” this season & have fun incorporating some updated pieces into your collection.

    Neutrals:
Soft neutral colors are everywhere this season – shades of pale gray, beige, peach, and taupe are this spring’s staple colors. Unfortunately, not everyone can wear these colors since they tend to wash some women out. If you have this issue, mix soft neutrals with bright colors such as shades of turquoise, coral, and blue. Some of my favorite color combinations are light peach with coral, light gray with turquoise, and layered shades of sand, beige and khaki. I also love neutrals with metallics!

Springtime Savings: Looking Fabulous on a Budget
By Alana Finnie
It’s easy to go overboard spending-wise when springtime rolls around. All of our gray and black winter frocks seem so boring in contrast to the gorgeous colors that are on full display in every store. But you don’t have to break the bank to look fantastic this season. With my shopping budget of basically $0 (fine, maybe a tiny bit more than that), it’s tough to find ways to update my style. Sticking to accessories is the easiest way for me. You can update what you already have (ie: a little black dress, anything denim, a plain white t-shirt, etc.) with a few great accessories and make a huge difference in the way you look. Here are a few springtime delights that won’t leave you penniless.

Scarves

Buying a few scarves is a great way to step-up your wardrobe in the cheapest way possible. Not only does it warm you up during this transitional period, it also can turn your normal, everyday “blah” look into a totally different outfit. There are countless options out there. I like to go to flea markets and try to find deals, but if you’re wary of that, there are some great finds all over the place! This scarf from Old Navy is on sale for about $11. You can find this and many others at oldnavy.com.

Mary Richardson has been a pathfinder for women in the news world. Currently the co-host of Chronicle on ABC’s WCVB-TV Channel 5 in Boston, her career followed a coast-to-coast path, which shows, as she says, “that you can have your dreams, and can dare to aspire to bigger things.”

A native Californian, Mary began a career in teaching after completing a degree in English. Upon assigning her students a communications project she began to appreciate her own interest in communications and started attending graduate school at night. The decision to quit teaching to attend school full time and undertake the required internship paved the way to Mary’s future in broadcasting.

Outline is Created and Ready to Write

I’ve recently begun working with the Book Coach, Keith Leon for support in writing my book, “90 Days 2 Love, Transforming Your Life From the Inside Out To Attract Your Soul Mate.” Not only will he support me in the writing process, he will guide me through self-publishing, gathering endorsements, and getting it out there! I am so excited to finally commit to this project that has been brewing inside of me for years!

I’d like to share the journey with you in hope to offer you inspiration for any projects that you may have bubbling inside waiting for expression. It’s not always easy to give yourself permission to follow a dream or passion, and sometimes even when you think you are ready (like I did) still you find yourself stuck and unable to begin or if you do begin, lose momentum and not finish. I realize this has been a challenge for me – to commit and step past my fears – and write this book that is just bursting to be released from the depths of my heart and soul. So, like I have done in the past when I need support, encouragement, guidance, and help with accountability, I enlisted the services of a coach who is an expert in his field – who has walked his talk with success.

So to begin I had to share a bit of myself with Keith and so will share it with you:

Ages of Children: 26, 24, and 22

Education/Experience: BS in Education, master level courses in counseling and financial accounting in addition to several coaching, spiritual, and healing trainings.

Occupation: Relationship Intuitive, Love Strategist

Q: What do you like about your work, and what do you dislike?

A: I love seeing people connect to their hearts and truth, see their worth and value, let go of the emotions keeping them stuck, and begin to attract healthy people into their lives. I love to see the light go on in their eyes.

I am not as keen on the administrative and marketing end of the business – my favorite is speaking, working with clients, and writing.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment and/or the most challenging experience you have ever overcome?

A: There are so many challenging experiences that I have overcome and I am proud to acknowledge that. I was bedridden for 3 years, and another 3 of being down more than up. I was told to expect that I would not live normally due to sever neurological and central nervous system Lyme disease combined with fibromyalgia. I would not accept that, and I live pretty fully now – still challenges to face, yet I am very pleased with my determination, love, and efforts to be here and coaching and help others to heal and attract love today.

Q: What is your greatest passion in life – something that comes easy to you and does not feel like work, it just feels good?

A: Speaking on issues of passion, love, health, and relationships whether to a group or individuals.

Q: What is your life’s vision/mission – what do you want to contribute to the world?

A: I most want to connect millions of people to their own joyful hearts and to love

Q: What is your biggest issue – the thing that drains your energy, stops you, or gets in your way?

A: Fear, doubt, overwhelm – although I have released so much of this lately. Mind fog is especially challenging – some days I just can’t seem to make mind work, yet fortunately that seems to happen less and less – that has been a huge challenge in the past.

Q: What results are you looking for from coaching?

A: Support and guidance in creating and following a schedule especially to include writing, completion, publication and distribution of my book.

Q: What are your definitions of commitment and accountability?

A: Commitment – focus, determination, and vision to what you promise to yourself or others

Accountability – having integrity to do what you agree, yet be realistic with what you can do

Q: How committed are you to being accountable and doing what it takes to achieve the results you desire?

A: I am committed to a 10 – I have asked for support at home so that this is my main focus for the coming months in the area of work. I often get sidetracked with other work projects and I am determined to finally see my book through to completion because I believe it will shift the energy of my business and what I want to accomplish.

Q: What else would you like us to know about you?

A: One of the challenges that I have faced is that I have not honored some of my commitments because I over-commit thinking I can handle it all, and do not have the mental and physical stamina at times. I am striving for balance in my life, and yet it seems I go like crazy, then crash. I am in the process of shifting to more steadiness and constancy, and allowing this to feel normal.

I am fortunate to know that when I truly set my mind, heart, and commitment to something, I will achieve it because I believe in it and me – sometimes it takes awhile to reach that place yet I have found that whatever I believe, whether positive or negative, shows up in my life as truth. I have had to challenge many of my beliefs (even uncover what they actually were) to see what was holding me back in some of the areas of my life, and slowly each area has been shifting to the beliefs that I choose to empower and serve me. I am blessed to have an amazing system of support from people in my life who love me and believe in me – sometimes even when I doubt myself. That is one key to success in every area of your life – it certainly has helped me through the maze of Relating, Dating & Mating among other things.

Thanks for being a part of my support team! It is for all of you who are waiting for these words to make their way to the written page and inspire, support and guide you to a most joyful source of love – your own heart.

Applaud Women Winter Issue-Making Good Credit Card Purchase Decisions

Making Good Credit Card Purchase Decisions by Helen Dutton owner of A Vision of Your Own. Visit her website at
www.avisionofyourown.com.

QUESTION: My credit card bills are arriving from the holiday splurge. It all seemed like a good idea at the time of purchase, but now I’m wondering what on earth I spent my money on! What’s going on?

ANSWER: Ah…the January credit card bill blues! I’m wondering if you have similar thoughts every month when you get your credit card statement; chances are, there are many months when you look at your list of purchases and wonder “what on earth did I buy?” The answer of your discontent lies in your values.

Personal values are those attributes that we hold most near and dear to our hearts. They may include qualities like integrity and honesty, but they will often include elements such as nature, excitement, knowledge, and family. Look on-line for a comprehensive list of values – 100 or more – or you can contact me and I will send you a list. Take a first pass through the list and choose no more than 10. Let that sit for a bit. Now go through the list and narrow the list to 3 or 4. If you are having trouble narrowing it down (and most of us do ), ask yourself what would be the last thing you would give up if you had to? Applaud Women Winter Issue-A New Years Resolution

A New Years Resolution by Robin Young of owner of Northstar Financial Planning Inc. in Londonderry, NH. Visit www.northstarfp.com or contact Robin at 603.216.9226.

A fresh, new year is as good a reason as any to revisit timeless concepts when it comes to your life and your wealth.

How are you using the resources in your life: time, energy, relationships, talents and money to fulfill your life’s aspirations? By revisiting these essentials in auld lang syne style, you can reinvigorate yourself for the year — hopefully years — ahead!

Wealth is derived from wele & weal “well-being” on analogy of health. True wealth connotes financial riches but it is also true to mean health. Wealth by ALL definitions is happiness. You may link the word “wealth” with “money.” TRUE wealth is not; repeat NOT, the accumulation of money. Part of wealth is financial abundance but true wealth is much more. Research has shown that people are generally happier when they have abundance in all areas of their life including health, family, work, community, inner growth, learning, home, and finances. Applaud Women Winter Issue-Is Laser Hair Removal for You?

Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You? by Christina Haag, ARNP of Bedford Commons OBGYN in Bedford, NH. For more information, call 603-668-4646 or go to www.bcog.com.

You pluck, shave and wax but your hair keeps growing back. Why not consider Laser Hair Removal? More than 800,000 people annually are now undergoing this highly successful and popular cosmetic procedure.

Laser Hair Removal is a non-invasive, in-office procedure. Treatment times range from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on the size of the area(s) being treated. Low energy laser is directed at the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. This process heats up the hair shaft and permanently disables hair follicles from reproducing. Most people experience more than an 80% reduction in hair growth after three treatments to an area. And to read the rest of the article go to the Winter issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Applaud Women Winter Issue-The Results-The Weight Loss Battle

The Results-The Weight Loss Battle by Emily Pietro

In our last issue, we continued to follow Susan on her weight loss journey with Physician’s Healthy Weight Center (PHWC) and Dr. Warren. Since the last update, Susan has made it through the toughest time of year for anyone trying to get or stay in shape – the holiday season. Even though she encountered some bumps along the way, Susan was still able to stick to her goals and continue to lose weight.

“If you’re like me, whether you were on a diet before the holidays or not, you over indulged,” says Susan. “My husband got a HUGE container full of Godiva and Ghirardelli chocolates, nuts, cookies, all kinds of temptations, so obviously I dove into that a little. Christmas Eve came with all kinds of hors d’oeuvres, and of course we had a big Christmas dinner, and then New Years rolled around. I told myself that was my last day of bad eating habits, so I thought I might as well indulge, because if I didn’t, I knew I would feel deprived. My eating was offset by some intense activity around my house. I completely redid my bedroom, and ripping up old carpet is hard work, about three days worth. So even though I didn’t eat the way I should have, I got my daily activity in, and I was still able to lose two pounds!”And to read the rest of the article go to the Winter issue of Applaud Women at

Applaud Women Winter Issue-Get a Cosmetic Lift and Fight the Aging Process!

Get a Cosmetic Lift and Fight the Aging Process! by Kriss Soterion of Kriss Cosmetics, Manchester, NH. She can be reached at 603-624-2333 or at www.krisscosmetics.com.

Reverse the signs of aging with makeup by discovering non invasive tricks that work for celebrities and now for you. In today’s high technology world, chemists are mixing miracles in cosmetic formulas. Nature is meeting us more than half way to give these miraculous results through light reflective minerals. With the right formulas and the “Kriss signature technique” you can become your own master artist and fight the aging process successfully.

ENHANCE YOUR SKIN

Formula is key. Minerals shimmer, reflecting light and creating a special effect that diminishes the appearance of fine lines, creating a luminescent glow on the skin that speaks “radiance and youth.” The finer milled the formula the more of a ‘no makeup’, look you will get, so choosing loose formula powders are your best choice.. The minerals work to refine the look of your skin, making it appear smooth in texture. Pure formulas that are talc free will never rob moisture from the skin like traditional powders, so you will never have the look of dry wrinkly skin. Minerals blend onto the skin with a sheer perfection and when blended correctly can look almost airbrushed. Your mineral foundations will drastically improve the way the skin appears in every light, day or night. Under the flash of a camera it is incredible, under TV lights it is miraculous. The more light that reflects onto your face, the more smooth, ironed out the skin will appear. It is a true optical illusion. Applaud Women Winter Article - Datng-Do You Know This Guy?

As we do on most Sundays, my friends and I gathered for our recap of events that had transpired over the weekend. Usually our talks consist of an exchange of funny things that we had overheard, terrible dancers we saw at the local bars, or (of course) catching up on gossip; however, these usual topics took a backseat this time to instead talking about Stephanie’s love interest, or rather, flavor of the week.

Steph had been playing ‘the game’ with this guy Rob for a few weeks now – they would meet up on the weekends, he would send her a text message if he felt like it – basically, things were going pretty well by college standards. The main problem that Steph encountered was that Rob was almost a phantom: we never saw him during the week. In fact, the only time we saw him on weekends was when he was out partying with his friends. And to read the rest of the article go to the Winter issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Applaud Women Winter Issue-Health Benefits of Tea

January is National Hot Tea Month, and a time when eating and drinking healthy is on everyone’s mind. With cold and flu season upon us, it is even more important to know what we are putting into our bodies. So why focus on tea? Tea’s history dates back over 5,000 years. It was first used as a medicinal beverage, and grew into a beverage of choice.

Tea is all-natural and free of calories and preservatives. It contains B, C, and E vitamins, and the minerals folic acid, magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, fluoride, and carotene. The health benefits found in each of these vitamins and minerals contribute to the overall health benefits in tea. The most important substances in loose tea are the caffeine, essential oils and polyphenols (found in flavonoids in tea) And to read the rest of the article go to the Winter issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com. Applaud Women Winter Issue-Closet Clean Out Tips

Closet Clean Out Tips by Susan Kanoff

Do you have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear? Chances are it isn’t because you’re lacking clothes, but that you have way too many of them! A clean closet will help you to coordinate outfits more easily, maximize space and better organize your clothes. Here are some tips to help you with your closet make-over:

1. Have the right supplies on-hand including the most important, good hangers. My favorite type is the slim-line hanger—a thin velvet covered hanger that keeps clothes from slipping off. The slim-line can be found in most stores or on-line at www.onlyhangers.com/Cat-122-1-105/Slim-Line_Hangers.htm. Never use the metal drycleaner hangers as they can stretch and ruin clothes. Other supplies include boxes and/or trash bags for sorting clothes (label them toss, alter, donate and consign), plastic shoes boxes, and organizers for belts and scarves. Applaud Women Winter Article-3 Simple Steps to Transform Your Worries

Three Simple Steps to Transform Your Worries by Ginny Williams of Coach Ginny, Plum Island, MA

They show up before you even open your eyes in the morning, a non-stop stream of tangled worries about work, relationships, health, and finances. Worries can stay with you throughout your day, interrupting your focus whether you’re trying to work or relax. Worrying can become so automatic that you may not even question where your thoughts come from, or how to stop them.

Worrying is a learned behavior that can become an unconscious habit over time. Having concerns about the future or regrets about the past is normal, and it serves an important purpose in human survival. But there’s a big difference between working through a problem or challenge, versus being held hostage by your own thoughts. Applaud Women Winter Article - Wedding Trends for 2010

Wedding Trends for 2010 by Janie Haas of Janie Haas Event Consulting. www.janiehaasevents.com

The hottest trend of 2010 is…that there is no trend! Unlike the days of traditional planning, we are now finding that weddings are more about branding the event with the couple’s personal touches in lieu of a standard, cookie-cutter formula. These days, in the world of wedding planning, anything goes! Everything from lighting and party favors to entertainment and food options can contribute to the creation of a trademark for the wedding that speaks to the bride and groom’s specific preferences and interests.

No longer is it necessary for the ceremony to take place in a banquet hall or country club. Couples are thinking more “out of the box” when it comes to venue choices and are using their ceremony location to speak to who they are as individuals as well as a couple. If they have a favorite vacation setting, a family home or a spot where they first met, they may use that as an alternative to the more traditional ballroom — for instance, planning a wedding for two Red Sox fans at Fenway Park! With all this being said, a ballroom still offers great space, amenities and a security blanket with regard to weather should the couple choose to go a more traditional route. ....For the rest of the article go to the Winter issue of Applaud Women at www.applaudwomen.com.
