This vaccine is called Gardasil® and has been available since the spring of 2006. HPV is a virus that is spread by skin to skin contact, most commonly via sexual contact. It is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the nation. It is estimated that up to 80% of sexually active persons will be infected with this virus. There are high grade strains and low grade strains. The high grade strains are those that can lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, penis and anus. Nearly 4,000 women die yearly in the United States from cervical cancer. The low grade represent those that can lead to ano-genital warts.

An Inspiring Woman in NH - Leslie Sturgeon - Networking Guru

When Applaud Magazine was created almost 7 years ago the most important feature of the magazine

was our Inspirational women articles. Most of the women featured are from New Hampshire or Massachusetts. Occasionally we featured a woman who provided a very unique type of inspiration who did not live in our area. Now that we have transitioned to the strictly on-line publication, Applaud Women, we are very excited that we can offer even more inspirational women articles in each issue. I am including an excerpt from the article about Leslie Sturgeon here. -

Wow! “If you need something done, ask a busy person” hugely understates Leslie Sturgeon’s amazing capacity to out perform on whatever project she shines her attention. Filled with enthusiasm, a keen attention to detail, determination, and genuine desire to motivate other women, Leslie truly is an Inspiring Woman in New Hampshire.

Living in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Leslie noticed an absence of a support network for women. She met with women informally to discuss the challenges they face integrating their professional and personal lives and decided to create Women Inspiring Women (WIW).

The whole country, it seems, is “going green.” Almost everyone is concerned with producing less waste and using more organic resources. This can be a challenge in today’s tough economic environment. We are watching every penny while exercising frugal, thoughtful spending.

So, how do we save the planet AND save money? One simple way is an emerging trend in Fashion Makeovers called Re-styling.

By the way, have you heard that for this Fall, the new black is no longer brown and thank goodness for that. Sorry brown lovers but I just hate the color. Instead variations of grey is the latest new black. Not only do we get some variety but a much more classy color.

Rainy Day Activities for Parents & Children

Here is an article by Angela Hughes - Mom Extraordinaire. Angela writes a column for parents in each issue of Applaud Women. Since we have had so much rain over the summer we thought this would be a helpful article for parents to read. Here is one of the activities that Angela has suggested.

For the rest of the article please read the Summer issue of Applaud Women the premier on-line publication written by, for and about women in New Hampshire and n. Massachusetts. Papier-Mache Globe

1. Make a Paper Mache World Globe and label it. There isn’t a kid around that doesn’t like to get their hands sticky with a glue paste and ripped up newspaper. This craft is fun to paint and even more fun to make.

Supplies needed:

A round balloon
Lots of newspaper
Flour and water glue (instructions below)
A container for mixing the glue (old plastic containers work well)
A spoon or stick to stir the glue
A printer
Pencil
Blue and green tempera paint
Paint brushes
A dark marker

Make simple, thin glue from flour and water. Mix 1 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 4 cups of boiling water (the heating gives the
glue a nice consistency, but is not
necessary).

Simmer for about 3 minutes, and then cool.

Tear a lot of strips of newspaper.

Strips should be about 1 inch wide; the length doesn’t really matter.

Blow up and tie a round balloon for each student.

Papier-Mâché: Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue, wipe off excess, and wrap the strip around the balloon. Have at least three layers surrounding the balloon. Let it dry (at least overnight) after each layer.

Let the globe dry completely (it may take a few days). When the papier-mâché is dry, the balloon usually pops by itself, and separates from the outer papier-mâché skin.
Paint the globe with tempura paints and label accordingly.

Finding Mr. Right - Or Should You Find Yourself First

Cheri Valentine

Our columnist Cheri Valentine answers this question in the Summer issue of Applaud Women. Cheri Valentine is an expert in Relating, Dating & Mating. Her company, Inspired Connexions, specializes in helping people achieve successful personal and business relationships with confidence, clarity, and choice. Her coaching programs reflect her belief that who you are, is more important than what you do. You can reach Cheri at 603.918.8265 or visit www.cherivalentine.com.

Here is the beginning paragraph -

In your search for Mr. Right, have you ever stopped to consider who you are being in this search? When you look at who you are and the why of it, it helps you to act from a place of intention. This is helpful in both everyday life and particular situations. There are several parts of your being from which you can act. The core of you is your tick. What makes you tick is synergy of your purpose and passions. When you know what excites you from the deepest level and understand the reason for your existence, you are powerful in your intentions and you are aligned with your source.
